What They Say
The kingon curse is broken " and Hyoue's powers are out of control! Heartbroken, he returns to the village where it all began "unleashing a flood of memories about the origin of his relationship with Amane. Meanwhile, Amane herself must take part in the village's annual ceremony before a contemptuous crowd. With no allies at her side and a malicious koma-oni on her heels, can she muster enough strength to track down her loyal demon-dog and bring him home?
Into the doghouse goes Hyoue! Was it really gluttony that was the demon's downfall or was it another deadly sin that sent him back home with his tail between his legs.
Hyoue's relationship with his mistress Amane could be called parasitic, symbiotic... Romantic? Whatever you want to call it Hyoue's relationship might now be called over. In his eight year relationship with Amane, Hyoue has developed deep feelings for the young woman he calls master. When he gave her his mana, he possibly did not think this girl would someday end up taking his heart. And to express his feelings properly, Her Majesty's Dog has crossed the line that has always existed between koma-oni and mana-tsukai. Unfortunately, this has not only resulted in a situation where he has become a burden on his mistress, but he has been exiled to his old remote island village.
Great change of pace with this latest volume as the manga turned from mild horror/fantasy to fantasy romance. And the way Takeuchi went about it, by taking time to reveal the history behind Amane and Hyoue's past, really set up the final scene perfectly. The obligatory fight based off miscommunication was a manga standard. Takeuchi does a good job of making light of that fact later. There are moments of moonlit reflection from both sides. Each character goes back to their first meeting. The intimacy is clear since they share the same perspective almost perfectly. And finally a little wit before the two are re-united again. Brilliant! And in manga form... No they are not a real "real couple" yet! Can't have Amane's naivety just stop like that right!?!
Her Majesty's Dog is possibly getting the least amount of play for Go!Comi. Yet for some reason with every new volume I really feel this is the publisher's best title. It is a sleeper in every sense, but as a fantasy title it has solid moments of excitement and fear. And as a romance it is sweet and humble, just like the main character. Another guilty pleasure.
