Creative Talent:
Writer/Artist: Asuka Katsura
Translation: Cameilla Nieh
Adaptation: Cameilla Nieh

What They Say:
Hagi shows just how resilient he can be, Kai is as stubborn and reckless as ever, and confused, sweet Riku is once again in the wrong place at the wrong time. Speaking of time, this volume also features a longer flashback sequence that takes us to the 1800's and another violent episode in Saya's curious, catastrophic life! Saya faces her brutal tormentor Charles head on.

What We Say:
Saya’s awakened personality is very dark and Katsura’s ability to convey character’s emotions through their facial expressions continues to impress.  She now seems to be much more interested in killing Charles than rescuing Riku.  The final battle between Saya and Charles is somewhat short, but still cool.  During the melee, Riku is mortally wounded.  His only chance of survival is to become Saya’s Chevalier by drinking her blood.  While he would ultimately survive, his humanity would be destroyed.  Saya will only save Riku if it is what Kai wants.  Talk about a tough decision.  How far would you go to save your little brother?

With everything that has happened, Kai has lost both Saya and Riku.  Saya claims she only needs monsters around her so she can kill Diva, so she orders Kai to leave.  After some emotional wrestling, Kai forces the Red Shield’s leader to reveal Saya’s past.  This could convince Kai to leave because Saya is truly a monster, or maybe he will pity her and want to stay by her side.

Much of this volume examines Saya’s past.  I appreciate the full disclosure of who, how, and when as far as the Chiropterans, Chevaliers, and Saya and Diva are concerned.  The mysteries behind much of Diva’s Chevaliers actions remain, but that is a good thing.  Much like the last two volumes of this series, some of the ‘how’s’ in Saya’s past are different than the anime version.  I don’t feel these differences or better or worse, just different.

The ending leaves me wanting more as Diva and her Chevaliers attack the ship carrying Saya and the other Red Shield members.  It seems Diva and Saya can only bear the children of Chevaliers created by the other.  Since learning of Riku becoming a Chevalier, Diva has become very interested in meeting him.  Will Diva and Saya finally fight for the first time?  Or will Diva’s Chevaliers be more than happy to smash and grab Riku before retreating?
