Cosmic plans for FANTASTIC FOUR 2

By: Patrick Sauriol
Date: Monday, October 18, 2004

While speaking to the assembled press converging on the set of FANTASTIC FOUR this past weekend, producer Ralph Winter was asked if his team had already begun thinking about the sequel possibilities for this new superhero film franchise. "Funny you ask," Winter replied to the group, "we were talking about the Silver Surfer just the other night."

FF director Tim Story then chimed in, "Of course. It obviously depends on the success of this film, but I would like to see the Silver Surfer."

For those unfamilar with the arcane world of comics, the Silver Surfer was the alien herald of Galactus, a giant cosmic being that came to Earth with the intent on harvesting our planet for his nourishment. As chronicled in FANTASTIC FOUR issues #48 and #49, the Surfer and Galactus battled the Fantastic Four until the herald's allegiance was turned by a chance encounter with Alicia Masters, the blind artist whose heart belonged to The Thing. Recognizing the right for the humans to live, the Surfer switched sides and battled alongside the Fantastic Four. Eventually the team found a means to stop Galactus from devouring the Earth but at the cost of the Silver Surfer's freedom. As a result of his betrayal, the Surfer's former master banished him from travelling the galaxy by erecting a barrier surrounding the Earth, turning our planet into his prison.
