After a few weeks of being one of the hot casting rumors surrounding Zack Snyder's reboot of Superman, Warner Bros. Pictures is making it official that Kevin Costner is the next actor to play Jonathan Kent, the adoptive father who raised Clark Kent as his own son.

“Jonathan Kent is the only father figure Clark has ever had, the man who was there to help Clark understand what he was meant to do in the world as Superman." says director Snyder. "Kevin will be able to communicate the quiet strength of this rural American man who raised the greatest super hero of all time.”

Costner will star alongside Diane Lane, who plays his wife, Martha, and the film’s star, Henry Cavill, who will play the new Clark Kent/Superman.

Costner most recently starred in 2010’s “The Company Men,” and is currently in development on the comedy “The One.” He has won two Academy Awards®, for producing and directing the epic “Dances with Wolves,” also garnering a nomination for Best Actor. He has also starred in a wide range of memorable films, including “The Untouchables,” “No Way Out,” “Bull Durham,” “Field of Dreams,” “JFK,” “The Bodyguard,” “Wyatt Earp,” “Tin Cup” and “Swing Vote,” to name a few.

Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder are the producers of the film. The screenplay is being written by David S. Goyer based on a story by Goyer and Nolan. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are serving as executive producers.

Superman will fly into theaters December 2012.

I like the casting choices.  Both are great actors who can do a lot in a little time, with the right script.  I just hope there's more substance to the story than 300 had.  While it told a good story, it was the visuals that made that movie the hit is was.  The plot was an afterthought.  But after reading some comments on here, it seems some fans would prefer a single 90 minute, running fight for a Superman movie.  I hope that is not the case with this.

Wonderful casting choices for ma and pa Kent. I'm a longtime fan of Costner's and Diane Lane, to me, is an American treasure. I've been watching her since "A Little Romance" back in 1979. I grew up watching her grow up in movies. I don't Zod being in the movie, but i do like this.

I can see Costner playing a humble honest farmer, the role fits him like a glove. Lane is the one that seems more of a stretch as the farmer's wife. Still, I don't want to spend too much time with them anyway.

I want a 90 minute running fight for Superman, it would be the first time. I want an action movie as in Action Comics, forget the drama, the child rearing and all that other bullshit that bogs the movie down. We can sort of fly through all that b.s., we already know Supes is a boy scout with traditional values that he stands for truth, justice and the American way. Now let's see him get into a real drag-out dog fight for 90 minutes, tear some shit up and kick some ass. Lots of slow motion-speed up scenes, some bullet time punches and freeze frames. Make it a visual spectacle like only Snyder can.

Costner has had some missteps (Waterworld,  The Postman) but mostly is a rock solid performer, who's brought depth to a number of big roles. He won me over as Jake in Silverado, and I still like his version of Wyatt Earp. I think he'll make an awesome Jonathan Kent.

As for Diane Lane...been a big fan ever since she was Ellen Aim in Streets of Fire.  I think Snyder is on the right track. I too hate the idea of ANOTHER General Zod appearance, but I'll trust the filmmaker and Viggo to bring something new to the table.

Great Kostner is really a great choice.

I don't think that Zod has been confirmed as the villain yet. As far as I know it's still just rumor at this point.

Costner no doubt can play a role like Jonathan Kent in Superman, so I agree with most here that he's perfect for that part.

Wise, I have to disagree with you somewhat with this notion that we need an all action, no drama Superman movie.  Mind you, I think I see what you're saying in a way.  This next movie doesn't have to spend too much time with Clark Kent's background because virtually everyone who knows Superman certainly knows how and where he came from.  But having said that, it's still good to have a touch of drama because a movie that has just great action and effects etc. won't be that good without some drama.  The audience must be given reasons for connecting with the characters and there's no better way for that than through powerful, emotional story and character arcs.  For example, in the Donner version of Superman (1978), if we didn't see Jonathan Kent die, then we wouldn't have felt one of Clark Kent's strongest reasons for finding his sense of purpose and wouldn't have cared as much to see him pursue his destiny at the Fortress of Solitude.

But yeah, overall, I believe I see what you're saying.  In terms of action, it wouldn't be bad to see this next Superman movie be taken up a notch and given Zack Znyder's track record thus far, I'm sure we won't be disappointed!

keithdaniel 3/18/2011 10:08:35 AM

BTW, the heart of the Superman character and the story itself is to see how and why Superman cares for people and giving us a touch of that with his background would give the audience a stronger rooting interest.

I'm liking the choices for Martha and Jonathan, but I'm still not liking Cavill as Supes.  I just can't see it.

Wiseguy 3/18/2011 10:35:03 AM

Yeah KD, I was exaggerating and having a little fun trying to pick up in lusiphur's comment. But I wouldn't be disappointed at all if Snyder did exactly what I said. And I do hope he keeps the drama to a minimum and ramps up the action. We've yet to see Superman in that epic battle and more than anything that's what I want. I mean he basically fooled Zod and company in part 2 and in Returns the hardest thing he did was lift a piece of rock and throw it into outer space.

The fight in part 2 was pretty great for its time but it just wasn't EPIC. I need slow motion-speed up scenes, some bullet time punches and freeze frames, lol
