He has to be in the talks to play Pa Kent. Unless he is trying to start playing totally different characters in movies. I think ever Perry White would be out of the range he has shown us.

Maybe they found a new Jor-El..... no, forget I said that.

I can see him as Pa Kent the ADOPTIVE father.  Calling him step father implies that he scooped up Jor-El's wife lol

Yeah, I was thinking Perry White or Jonathan Kent. Either would be fine. I have nothing against Costner. He has had a great career and I've enjoyed his acting. He happens to be in that slump mode that can happen in a Hollywood career.

He could also potentially be a Jor-El or a Lex Luthor. Those are a stretch but we know nothing of how these characters will be portrayed in this reboot.

I like Kevin Costner. I do think its an odd choice simply because thats a lot of money to pay an actor for such a minor role when all that money could go to better specail effects... But we'll see

@jfdavis -  despite box office ticket sales, i thought both Waterworld and The Postman were decent movies. Waterworld was more fun a movie than a good one of course, but The Postman is an underrated movie.

I actually really like it if he's cast as Jonathon.  That's the sort of role he could really thrive in, providing some strong character moments without the movie relying too heavily on him.  If the role is for anything more than that, i.e Luthor or even Jor-El, I think it's a misstep though not a huge one.

I've always liked Costner so I don't have a problem with him at all. What I don't like is the idea of them going that far back on Superman's life. Maybe, hopefully it's just on flashbacks but I don't want a retelling of Supes origin. I'm hoping that we pick up with Superman already established.

lusiphur 2/22/2011 10:47:39 AM

Why would having Jonathan Kent in a Superman movie mean they're retelling his origin?  Can't Clark still have a relationship with his adoptive parents now that he's Superman?  Perhaps he'll need some "fatherly wisdom" from Pa in order to overcome some obstacle during the movie.  In no way is a flashback or retelling of the origin necessary.

I too have always enjoyed Costner.  Superman was always my favortite, and I am not going to jump to any conclusions.  I will let the movie stand or die on it's own merit.  I just hope it is great.

I think Costner would be a great Pa Kent. But, he'd also be good as Perry White. Time will tell.

On a side note, and I relaize this character isn't suppossed to be in this film, but I was reminded of Lex Luthor the other day. If anyone watches that new cop show on FOX,  "The Chicago Code," you've seen the actor Delroy Lindo. He plays Alderman Ronin Gibbons. If one could get past the race thing, I think he'd make a great Lex Luthor. Greatd actor with the right combination of sophistication, intelligence and menace. Plus, he has a great pressence on screen.

Wiseguy 2/22/2011 11:56:50 AM

Well lusiphur because Pa Kent dies in the original Superman before Clark becomes Supes as is the case in the original comic. So it seems to me that they're doing 1 of 3 things,

1-either retelling Supes origin to a degree maybe just his teen years, maybe just right before he becomes Superman or all of it,

2-having flashbacks of Pa Kent like I said before or

3-ignoring all of Supes previous films altogether and making this the modern Superman most know from Earth One. But this option would  need clarification for some as to why Pa Kent is still alive
