What They Say

The Review!
On this volume 2 ("2nd session") of the big-hit show Cowboy Bebop are episodes 4 ("Gateway Shuffle"), 5 ("Ballad of Fallen Angels"), and 6 ("Sympathy for the Devil"). Faye Valentine (voiced by Megumi Hayashibara) finally joins the Bebop crew - Spike Spiegel (Kouichi Yamadera), Jet Black (Unshou Ishizuka), and Ein the intelligent (or is he, really?) dog - and Vicious (Spike's nemesis) is introduced. Each episode is well paced and the action sequences are exceptionally directed. Definitely a cool series.

Both video and audio are excellent. The visuals are beautiful to look at, and the portions of computer-assisted animation blends in seamlessly. The voice cast and the excellent music (by Yoko Kanno) truly bring this show to life. As with the first session, the disc comes housed in a standard plastic keepcase (rather than a jewel case). The back of the keepcase has a description of the backdrop setting of the show along with a "profile" of each major character (in 2nd session, it's on Faye Valentine) - all in English so you don't have to run for the Kanji dictionary to enjoy it. The retro-ish-looking cover illustration of Faye is by Toshihiro Kawamoto.

The menu looks nice, but it doesn't have anything fancy. The main menu has access to each of the episodes. In the submenu, each episode is accessible by one of 6 divisions: opening, pre-episode-title, pre-commercial-break, after-commercial-break, ending, and preview. There is also an "information" short clip which showcases the various Cowboy Bebop merchandise available.

Well, what else can I say about this show that hasn't already been said? It's a cool story, the characters are unique and well-constructed, the animation is beautiful and fluid, and the music is outstanding. Truly deserving of the DVD treatment, well treated it is. If you can play region-2 discs, and can't wait for Anime Village to get off its butt and release the series over here domestically, this import DVD is a great buy.
