With the 20th Birthday Edition DVD of Child's Play hitting markets this week, Shock Til You Drop had a chance to talk shop with the creators about the planned remake of the killer doll tale. There have been reports that the producers wanted to go back and make the tale a much darker take on the Chucky origins.
And it looks like that's what is happening.
Naturally, I don't want to say too much. A lot of the Chuck mythology was reworked by David and Tom Holland - specifically the voodoo aspect but also the specific detail of Chucky being possessed by the soul of a serial killer, which is distinct from my script where he was the living embodiment of the kid's Id. All of the stuff in the movie is such an intrinsic part of the mythology I think it would be misguided to stray from that too far. We have ways and ideas of making that darker. Darker, we believe, than the original movie.
So, less humor and more horror seems to be the game plan. To read more, click the link above.
Seed of Chucky was fantastic, it just wasn't scary. Some people just didn't "get" the brand of humor used in the last two movies which is too bad, but a return to the horror roots will be welcome.
Does that mean less lighting?
I wouldn't mind another Chucky if they take it more seriously. The problem with Chucky to me was the same as Freddy, they wanted to make it funnier than scary. Let's get back to basics. However Child's Play was excellent so I don't know if they can top or equal that.
Darker than the original? The original was plenty dark. And an excellent flick. It figures. They want to mess with something good and screw it up and leave all the screwed up stuff alone and not do much that's new and good.
