Creator Doesn't Approve of HARLOCK Film

Date: Thursday, April 17, 2008
Source: Associated Press

It seems that a Korean company has a 100 mil budget and a plan to bring the manga Space Pirate Captain Harlock to the big screen but nobody bothered asking the actual creator for consent. This comes after production shingle Eight Peaks (Princess Hours) announced that it signed an agreement with Genome Entertainment on April 10.

The well known creator of Space Battleship Yamata, Leiji
Matsumoto told the Mainichi Shimbun  that he heard about the announcement, but he was never directly and formally notified about it. No consent hase ever been given.

The series, which was originally published in Play Comic from 1977-79, has already been adapted into a video series, two television series and two theatrical movies.

Man that's a shame. I would love to see this as a live action movie.

I'm French Canadian and the first serie dubbed in french was huge in the early 80s here and in France.

To me it is as memorable as G.I Joe, Transformers, He-Man, Thundercat and all the great 80s Cartoons.

Mee too, when I was a kid in Canada, I watched french cartoon in the mornings and when it played, I loved that captain.

It would be cool to see him in live action.

Yes...but they need to ask for consent. This is a matter of the honor system among the Japanese. They need to ask consent and should bring the creator of Harlock on as a creative consultant. I am sure that if they show him his due respect, he will back the production.

It's still on... I watched it this morning with my 4 years old son before coming to work on CBC!

Yeah I had heard that they had started playing them again. But I have Albator 79 and Albator 84 DVD box sets (the first 2 series from 1979 and 1984)

I agree that they need to ask for consent. But it is a shame that the live action movie may never happen simply because they never asked Matsumoto.

they said that the live action Spiderman movie would never happen either (back in 1994) and lo and behold... poof. it only took them ten years.
if something has 100 million then we'll eventually see it.
my question, if its a Korean company, does that mean all the actors will be Korean?

The last Korean flick I saw was D-War and that was terrible.
