Crossbones Cast in Cap 2

Grillo in Winter Soldier

Source: Yahoo News

We have our first official new villain for Captain America: The Winter Soldier, it is Crossbones. Crossbones will be played Frank Grillo who is better known for roles in The Grey and Warrior.

Yahoo News is reporting “The actor will play Crossbones, the leader of New York City's Savage Crims gang, who then joins forces with the Red Skull”.

Grilo will join Cris Evans Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders (officially cast as well), Scarlett Johansson, and Anthony Mackie in the Captain America sequel scheduled for April 4, 2014.

Who is Crossbones then?

Here is the official Marvel bio on this character:

“Young Brock Rumlow led the Savage Crims gang on New York's lower east side. After he brutalized fifteen year old Rachel Leighton, two of her brothers assaulted Brock; the eldest brother was killed. Rumlow fled, entering the Taskmaster's school for criminals, and within three years became an instructor there under the name Bingo Brock. As a mercenary, he enlisted with the communistRed Skull (Albert Malik) in Algeria, serving him as "Frag" until he was sent to invade Arnim Zola's Switzerland chateau. Ultimately the only team member to survive the assault, Rumlow there met and impressed the NaziRed Skull (Johann Shmidt); this Skull accepted Brock’s services, code-naming him ‘Crossbones’.” Red the full bio here on Marvel.com.

This is encouraging.  I have great hopes that the look of the character will match the comics.  I'll admit to being a little worried about Falcon so this makes me feel better.  Even though Cap 1 was probably the worst of the Avengers solo flicks it was still pretty enjoyable.  Here's to hoping it only gets better.

I must disagree with you, reek. Having recently re-watched all the Marvel flicks up to and including The Avengers, I'd have to say that The Incredible Hulk was the worst. I've actually seen Captain America three times now and i enjoy it more each time.

Hopefully they don't try to shoehorn The Red Skull into this one. Avengers was cosmic, and the Skull went off to places unknown via the Cosmic Cube / Tessaract. To pull him back to Earth in this movie would alter the scope, I think, a bit too much. I think this movie needs to be much more grounded and about Cap questioning his place in our modern world, and in America, than about forcing a villain into the story that was sent halfway across the galaxy in the last movie.

Awesome.  What with WInter Soldier and now Crossbones this movie is going to be chock full of ass kicking goodness.  Bring on Phase 2.  Marvel can do no wrong at this point.

Well they'll have to recast Hugo Weaving if they bring back Red Skull for anything, he's not interested in comic movies or big american tentpoles anymore and has said as much very publicly lately.

I actally feel that Captain America is one of the better solo movies leading up to Avengers, it just came at the end of a summer full of potential that was squandered film after film and so perhaps wasn't recieved with the enthusiasm it deserved.  I actually believe it was stronger than THOR and I certainly have enjoyed it more after repeated viewings of all the solo films.  Frank Grillo has had small but good roles in a few films recently and this will certainly get him the attention he deserves, not bad to bloom at the tender age of 49 eh?

I think the Red Skull should return at the end of the movie to tease for Cap 3. The Skull featured highly in the WInter Soldier storyline, but mostly in the background. Casting Crossbones is a good step. Hope they stay true to the original story.

IM 2 is the worst flick.

Whats a Crossbones?  Looks a bit like Bane.  Also, I think Bingo Brock is a much cooler name.   This here is my henchman Bingo Brock.  That would've been dope.

I read something to the effect that Grillo was killing it as Crossbones and made all the other actors look like novices.

Similar thing was reported for Kingsley as Mandarin, went far enough to say that Ben got a standing ovation from the cast and crew for his turn as the Mandarin.

Maybe Marvel is making a conscious decision to really make the villains stand out. You know how they say that superheroes are only as good as their nemeses

This sounds great. I am looking more forward to this each day. I have to agree with reek that Captain America was the weakest of the solo outings. It is the only one that really felt like set up to The Avengers, rather than a stand alone film. So based on that, I really think this film has nowhere to go but up.

I'm sure Weaving is neck deep in Hobbit land right now.
