Paramount Pictures has officially confirmed previous reports that they're moving forward on Mission: Impossible IV, with Tom Cruise back for the role of Ethan Hunt. The film, which will be produced by Tom Cruise, J.J. Abrams (Star Trek) and Bad Robot Productions and will star Cruise, will be released Memorial Day weekend 2011. The film will be co-financed by David Ellison's Skydance Productions. Paramount is searching for a director for the fourth installment.

"Tom and J.J. are great talents and we are excited to be working with them to re-launch this legendary franchise," said Paramount Pictures Chairman & CEO Brad Grey.

Screenwriters Josh Applebaum and Andre Nemec are attached to write the script, from an original idea by Cruise and Abrams.

The studio has it currently set for May 20, 2011. This Memorial-themed release would have it competing against Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and The Hangover 2.

Since hitting theaters in 1996, Paramount's Mission: Impossible franchise has taken in $1.401 billion worldwide.

Does this qualify as a zombie franchise now?

The Hangover 2 is a real surprise here mi4 will have to wait for more details. It doesn't surprise me that mi4 is happening this has been a rumor for months now and cruise's new movie Knight and Day is pretty much like a romantic comedy version of mi4

I've enjoyed all these films so I'll look forward to this.  But why did Paramount CEO refer to it as a "re-launch".  It still has Cruise and it's only been four years since the last one so it's just another sequel to me.  Is that term just thrown around to make it sound new or something?

BTW, that Knight and Day trailer is just bad.

Mi:4 could be good as long as they stick to the formula they used in 3, probably catch this after i see the others listed.

I am suprised about the hangover 2 as well, but with its success i am sure there will be the hangover 3 in theaters, followed but many direct to video follow ups as well. I wonder if Iron Mike is going to be in it again?

Jensen Ackles for Captain America!!!

Good, looking forward to this. Love this series. And that Knight and Day film looks like tons of fun, really looking forward to that also

Sorry wiseguy but i agree with ddiaz on the knight and day trailer. I think this movie will flop and as far as sequels go the only movies i'm interested in seeing is iron man 2 and Wallstreet: money never sleeps. The first trailer has come out and it actually looks pretty decent.

silversurfer 2/10/2010 8:15:00 AM

I think MI:IV will be pretty good...each one of them have been entertaining....I haven't seen the trailer for Knight and Day...I'm going to have to check it out.....

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps should be good as well....Gordon Gecko is back!

kimbroo 2/10/2010 10:45:36 AM

The Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps trailer is very pretentious.  I have no interest.  Shia?  c'mon!

A lot of critics had issues with the third MI (mainly those that complain about "too much action."  WTF? It's a GDamned action movie!  There's supposed to be action!) But I loved MI3.  I am definitely looking forward to this and I hope they attach a great director.

You know, I had a crazy thought: Abrams added "character development" to the MI franchise with III. Leonard Nimoy who's close buds with JJ, left MI after two seasons because of no character development.  A cameo by Paris would rock! Also may fix the stink of making Jim the villian in the first one...

MI4,.......meh, if anything i'll catch a matinee. Hangover 2? C'mon this is movie that should stand alone & not whored out with corny sequels.
