In a feature piece which centers on Tom Cruise's latest career choices, the Hollywood Reporter has let slip that the actor is in talks with Warner Bros. Pictures to board We Are Mortals, Doug Liman's upcoming adaptation of the sci-fi manga All You Need Is Kill. At one point in time, his Interview with the Vampire co-star Brad Pitt was also being considered for the lead role but that seems to have changed with Cruise's name being thrown into the casting mix.
The trade doesn't say whether the Bourne Identity director will tackle "Mortals" or his recently announced adaptation of "Everest" first but we should hear more about the feature if Cruise does come on board in an official capacity. The actor has recently jumped back into the sci-fi genre after choosing to topline Joseph Kosinsk's long-awaited adaptation of Horizons and also recently agreed to board One Shot, the upcoming take on the Jack Reacher character from author Lee Childs.
Plot Concept: "We Are Mortals" is an adaptation of "All You Need is Kill," a Japanese novel by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. There's one thing worse than dying. It's coming back to do it again and again... When the alien Gitai invade, Keiji Kiriya is just one of many raw recruits shoved into a suit of battle armor and sent out to kill. Keiji dies on the battlefield, only to find himself reborn each morning to fight and die again and again. On the 158th iteration though, he sees something different, something out of place: the female soldier known as the B*tch of War. Is the B*tch the key to Keiji's escape, or to his final death?
Thanks to Chopsaki for the submission.
