CUBE (1998)

By Randy Palmer     June 11, 2000

CUBE (1998) is one movie that really would have lived up to the kind of hype AIP loved to expound when it came to their '50s films. The story, concocted by Andre Bijelic, Vincenzo Natali (also the director), & Graeme Manson, concerns a group of 6 people who inexplicably find themselves locked in a three-dimensional maze wired with lethal booby-traps. Using their collective talents to find the exasperatingly elusive exit, they gradually succumb to physical & mental exhaustion that cause them to turn on one another while the traps whittle their numbers to the bone. There are scares aplenty in CUBE; the suspense factor is off the scale; and the set design and cinematography are a constant delight. Like the interlocking puzzle faced by the (mostly unknown) cast, CUBE's parts fit together securely, although the ending (with its 'ascension into heaven' connotations) can get in the way of 100% satisfaction. But that's purely a relative, and relatively minor, squabble. For a first-time director's feature debut, CUBE is simply brilliant.
