What They Say
Our saga continues in this fourth installment of the Daikuji series ...

In this episode Akuji gumi has gained the confidence of the Nako religious clan after successfully capturing Tsukigase Nene. Meanwhile, Tamanegi and others try to find out who is behind the funding of the Nako clan. The Nako clan members, now without their leaders, cause a riot in search of revenge and set the clan headquarters ablaze. Our lovers, Yume and Yoko, explore their passion for one another when the mysterious Professor Ihabella enters the picture, in search of Yume. As we close, the battle between Akuji gumi and the Nako clan reaches a bloody climax not to be missed.

The Review!
Akuji continues to make his moves in gaining power and takes on the Nako-Clan this time but not before their own downfall begins internally.

For our primary viewing session, we listened to this show in its original language of Japanese. This is also the only language available on this release as no English language version was made for it. The Japanese track is a pretty straightforward stereo mix that does have some good moments of directionality, more often in the fight scenes than anywhere else, and the music does a nice job of giving a full feeling performance. Dialogue is clean and clear throughout and we had no problems with dropouts or distortions during regular playback.

Originally released to video in 2003, the transfer for this OVA series is presented in its original full frame aspect ratio. With a lot of really bold colors in large sections, there's no noticeable blocking going on and that's the major problem that this release could have had but avoids. Cross coloration and aliasing are just about non-existent and overall this is a really sweet looking transfer. While the previous volume had some serious dot crawl problems, this volume looks almost pristine by comparison and really shines here like the first volume did for us. The opening and ending sequences are retained in their original Japanese text format, most likely as hentai releases don't usually have clean versions to offer up. They're not translated directly but are done following the show.

Tsukigase gets the main cover and is nicely dressed up in her kimono robes and smiling as the wind moves around her that's set against a pale purple and pink backdrop that really brings out the darker purples in her hair and outfit nicely. This is a really attractive looking cover that outdoes a lot of regular titles. The back cover has a lot of artwork and shots from the show on it, enough that it takes up about two-thirds of it. The bottom third has a small summary and a list of the discs features. There's a small technical grid along the bottom that's clear on the features and overall it's easy to see exactly what's on the disc between the two sections. There's no insert with this release but the cover is reversible. The reverse side is the same image for the front cover but the back cover has a different series of screenshots used for it while everything else remains the same.

The main menu uses a stern shot of Ihabarra set against an abstract wash of murky colors for the background and with the menu selections running down the left side. The strong instrumental music plays along to the static imagery and loops for a pretty lengthy amount of time instead of the usual short loop, letting you really get the full song. The layout is decent and there isn't too much here overall. As there was no language choice, the show defaulted easily to our preference for subtitles and we had no problems navigating here.

Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
With the fourth episode of Daiakuji, the plot moves forward again and while some of it can be a bit confusing from episode to episode it's something that all seems to work as it progresses ahead within each of the episodes. This volume gives us a bit more of the Nako-Clan but also brings Ihabarra more into play and her role in things is about to be expanded.

We get a little bit of Ihabarra at the beginning but it pales to her later on. What makes up things early on is a quick attack on the Neko-Clan by Akuji where he kidnaps Tsukigase. This ends up completely demoralizing the Neko-Clan and everyone in it starts to doubt whether they can survive much longer. While they despair, Akuji sets her up with his training partner and lets them start working her over, along with another girl, so that they can fully undergo the necessary work for Akuji to bring them over to their side and help in the fight to free the country from the matriarchal rule. But hey, that's a tough job so Akuji needs some downtime which he gets in visiting Yoko.

This ends up being one of the best sex scenes in the series so far since Yoko knows all she needs to about Akuji and basically treats him like her toy and does what she wants, which is something he doesn't let many of them do. She also brings some surprises to the table when Kikuko, in her chains and all, enters the room and she along with Yoko completely service him. This is just another part of Kikuko's training since she was captured but just like all the others, she's quite beholden to Akuji and does whatever anyone tells her to do if it will make him happier.

At the Neko-Clan headquarters, the peoples insistence on the blood that they need to survive has led them to go into the main place itself and that's led to a fire that's slowly consuming the building. Yume is so completely distraught over this that she's ready to end it all and wants to die engulfed in the flames. Red haired Yoko won't allow this to happen by herself and ends up offering to sacrifice herself along the way but only if they can be together at the end, which results in a rather interesting scene of the two of them making love in the midst of a traditional house crumbling under the flames. Talk about intense heat. With Yume being a dick-girl, and one that can't use her dick because bad things will happen if she does, the scene only goes so far but the two are passionate about it. Until Ihabarra shows up and reveals what Yume really is and takes complete control of her mental state for her own ambitions.

In Summary:
With the improvements in the video quality and the continuing minor tweaks to the subtitle script that's making it all the easier to read and enjoy, Daiakuji is a series that I wish had more episodes per volume but I'm enjoying the heck out of it anyway. The show continues to have fun with what it does and while it's playing to a storyline, it's in service to the sex for the most part and doesn't let the two collide in a bad way. This volume has a couple of really good scenes and sets up a few more girls for Akuji to work over in the future while giving the plot itself a rather good kick in the rear to something interesting. Good stuff with great designs and some good sex.
