Shane Black to Direct Doc Savage

A little late but worth commentating on

When you release a film with the second highest opening in history, your next job is just a phone call away. Sony Pictures locked down Iron Man 3 director, Shane Black, for a film based on the pulp hero Doc Savage. Deadline confirmed the news.

The president of Columbia Pictures, Hannah Hannah Minghella, stated: “We couldn’t be more excited to be building a franchise from the ground up with Shane and this team”. Then Minghella said, “Shane and Neal [Moritz] have a fantastic understanding of the character and a great take on the material and we can’t wait to get this production up and running.”

So who or what is Doc Savage? Doc Savage is a popular hero that ran on radio, film and TV. Doc Savage was a scientist, physician, adventurer, inventor, explorer and researcher with incredible strength, a photographic memory, and a vast intelligence. He used those skills and powers to fight evil. Sounds like a perfect summer blockbuster.

Sound off below Maniacs, who do you want for Doc Savage?

Dwayne Johnson is Doc Savage.

He better be.

Snew929,

you could say that about every single comic book character in existence. Especially the ones that have had a least a couple of movies. If it hasn't been seen by alot of people or if a new version is done to make it exciting, then it is bright shining new. There are 3 hit versions of Sherlock Holmes out right now. Pretty lively for a hundred year old character.

I won't say I'd hate The Rock as Doc Savage but I just don't see it.

The guy that comes to mind right away is Neal McDonough. He looks like the Man of Bronze to me but don't know if he can get muscular enough. Or how old they want to cast the role

I want it set in the thirties similar to the original stories. I want some retro pulp action. I want to see the ORIGINAL Fortress of Solitude

Doc had all the cliff hanging, high adventure moments that gave birth to Indy.

The Man Of Bronze was out kicking bad guy rumps years before the Man Of Steel first saw print and Doc was the first one to have a Fortress of Solitude.  The number of devices and gimmicks stocked in the vest he wore predated Batman's utility belt.

Doc is the grandfather of all the current sups and it is about time he got his big screen due.  And the George Pal version is best left forgotten.

I'm oh so ready for this!

Davewriter: I concur. The George Pal movie from the 1970's is so bad it can actually embarrass the person watching it. This role requires more than just a guy with a big physique (like The Rock). It needs an ACTOR, who also happens to be ripped.

I agree with all your observances about what Doc did/had before more iconic supers become known for it. The same was also true of John Carter, and we see how that went. For the record, I thougnt John Carter was thoroughly enjoyable and a good adaptation of Burroughs works. I wish we could get a sequel, but Disney's marketing camp[aign for that movie doomed it to failure. (Three words added to the title, "Warlord Of MArs". would've helped ever-so-much.

My hope is they'll do better with a Doc Savage film.

Hey guys I cast this movie in my head a few years ago with Johnson and you, Shane Black, the producers' and the studio don't have any choice in the matter.

So there.
