Black Hole Remake has New Writer

Jon Spaihts to kick start project

By Robert T. Trate     April 05, 2013

When Tron: Legacy arrived in theaters there were rumors that The Black Hole would get a remake from Disney. The director of Tron: Legacy, Joe Kosinski (whose Oblivion arrives this month) was instantly attached to the project. Since then, The Black Hole has remained dormant. The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Prometheus co-writer Jon Spaihts has now been hired by Disney to kick start the project. Justin Springer, who produced Tron: Legacy will be producing The Black Hole remake as well.

The original “Black Hole was the most expensive movie Disney ever made when it was released in 1979 with a cast that included Maximilian Schell, Anthony Perkins, and Ernest Borgnine”. Check out the original trailer below for more details.

What do you think Maniacs? I personally love the original film but know it does have its flaws. I think the over all story, very much in the vein of a darker 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, is a great start. Let’s see how Oblivion does and Spaihts’ next project for Universal, a reboot of The Mummy

I'm fine with this. I love the original as well. Watch it anytime it's on. A little improvement on some of the effects, and don't change V.I.N.C.E.N.T. too much. Even by today's standards, his design was pretty cool. And only improve a LITTLE on the soundtrack. I always loved the music to the movie. Especially the opening sequence. Gave that sense of foreboding that set the mood for the entire movie. That was the most brilliant part as far as I'm concerned.

It's not a movie I think needs or deserves a remake, but the last time I checked Disney didn't email me for advice on their future projects. You hit the head nail that it comes across as an outer space 20,000 Leagues, but for me even at that time, I thought the characters were blah, the effects poor, and the story nothing special. Roddy McDowall as VINcent was the best part for me.

It was their attempt to cash in on Star Wars which they thought was a movie their studio should have done. In the next couple of years after SW I think nearly every studio's efforts to use the Space/Fantasy/Bigger Than Life movies came up short because it was a whole new thing. Nobody had made those type of epic movies with big budget/directors/stars for maybe 10-15 years. Only Lucas and Spielberg knew what and how to do it.

If this were given a really good story I could see this being like another Sunshine by Danny Boyle.

I broke this news in a post on here last night.  Its ok Robert, you were probably asleep.... ha ha.  This is a remake that could work if its done well.  It was obvious in Tron: Legacy in the first few moments of the movie, Disney dropped that hint that the Black Hole would be next as it had been talked about for years a remake was coming.

Now bring on that bad boy Maximillian.  I just hope they don't deviate much from his design as that was one fearsome looking robot that put fear in people.  A change in color scheme mostly and slight change in design just nothing radical as you don't want to take away from the intimidation factor.

Maximillian did look bad ass...except for his legs. Why did he have legs at all? He was an anti-grav floater, so why legs?

I'm more excited by Disney's 20k Leagues Under the Sea remake with David Fincher that's soon to start production.

They already did a remake of "The Black Hole".

It was called "Event Horizon".

I liked the original, and if done well it could be a good remake with the effects and knowledge of Black Holes we know today. The tone of thye movie should remain the same, tense and foreboding and not make it a full action movie. Maximilian was awsome as a bad guy, no talking just slicing his way throug astronauts who dared cross him.

saw the original a few weeks ago, and it sucked. Even as a kid when I rushed to the theater (btw, I believe it was Disney's first PG film too!) I thought it was weak.

BUT! I am all for a remake!

Think about it, it has the potential to really create its own path, and not copy Star Wars. there were a lot of great building blocks, but they tried to hard to copy SW and can really do something different. Plus, what we know now about Black Holes compared to then is significant, and really be used to create a different outcome (especially since the Hell/Heaven ending was the dumbest and biggest letdown of all!)

The Black Hole was such a hollow shell compared to SW. It paled in comparison in every possible way - SFX, story, acting, scale - it was a very silly movie. And yes, the endig was WTH?!

I really don't see why this would need to be "remade" since the original was weak and I thik it did very poorly at the BO as well - Unless it's completely revamped and re-written, but then, why call it a Black Hole remake at all?

Oh well, it's not my money.

Yeah, the original never wowed me, even when I was a kid...but with today's writing and special effects, I think they could totally polish that turd and do something cool with it.  Let's see how it goes.
