Daredevil Rights Running Out

Daredevil Movie License in flux

The clock is ticking for 20th Century Fox to put its Daredevil reboot into production before character rights revert to Marvel -- but Fox and Marvel brass are working out an arrangement that could allow the comic book franchise to remain at Fox past its Oct. 10 deadline.

Fox is in discussions with Joe Carnahan to direct what's been described as a "Frank Miller-esque, hardcore 70s thriller" take on blind Hell's Kitchen superhero Matt Murdock -- a vision that would deviate from Disney/Marvel's family-friendly tone. Carnahan has yet to receive an official offer, though multiple sources tell Variety that he's the choice.
Fox needs to start lensing by Oct. 10 or Marvel gets the Daredevil character back. Fox is said to be high on Carnahan's take, but making that deadline would be nearly impossible; one solution the companies are discussing is a co-financing arrangement.
But Fox also has something Marvel wants: According to sources close to the project, marvel wants the use of characters from the Fantastic Four universe in future Marvel pics, including the giant, world-devouring supervillain Galactus, rumored to play a key role in future Marvel pics, and his messenger the Silver Surfer, who makes a deal in the comic books to serve as Galactus' messenger to save his home planet. Fox owns rights to both as part of its deal for Fantastic Four, which the studio is also rebooting with Chronicle helmer Josh Trank. Insiders say Fox wouldn't be willing to part with those characters.
Talks are expected to resume later this week. Reps from Fox, Marvel and Carnahan would not comment on the dealings.
Daredevil, which Chernin Entertainment is producing, would mark a return to the Fox lot for Carnahan after The A-Team.
After the success Open Road Films had with Carnahan's The Grey, Fox began developing Carnahan's actioner Continue, which was believed to be his next project. CAA-repped helmer is also developing a fresh take on Death Wish for MGM.

Thanks to Wyldstaar for the submission.

Hell yeah...I heard The Punisher is back at Marvel also...I, for one, would LOVE to see a Daredevil/Punisher movie - how's this - a mafia story - Matt is wanting to bring the bosses to justice, and Frank is out for blood...so Matt is working overtime trying to bring them to justice AND protect them from our favorite psychopath.  They could work in that element of "The Punisher Kills The Marvel Universe" where Matt actually defends Frank in court...seriously, I would LOVE to see that movie.

Caveman, you just made a pitch for an awesome weekly cable series! The budget wouldn't be that demanding and it could still be gritty and mature. I'd be down for that.

Don't care about DD, but I would love to see Marvel do the FF. It would really help them expand their movie universe into the cosmic.

We can kill this story.

Deadline reports this is not happening. But the good news is that at least Marvel will get something out of it. Daredevil! There is no chance in hell Fox can start up a movie by October 10th.

Personally, I would prefer they let Fox keep DD and snag FF and all of the characters. FF and all of their characters belong in the Marvel cinematic universe. DD is a gritty Marvel Knights street hero. It's not in the same boat as the Avengers/FF more family oriented heroes.

I completly agree that FF are more important to the marvel Universe then DD and as Elbaz said they fit better with the Disney style, however the more characters under one roof to me is often a good thing.

The bad news is this continues to not let me see Spidey Vs Kingpin.

Come on Fox, you had your chance with the FF and blew it; just give it back to Stan the Man so that we (the fans) can get an epic FF movie with all the bells and whistles such as Galactus.

ElBaz13 8/7/2012 5:53:52 AM

and not a Galactus cloud!

Anything Fox can loose is a good thing...you'd think after ruining som many franchises they'd let it go but nooooo....stupid Fox pieces of crap dumbass mother!#$!#$ !!

Yep...not happy today.

The reason why this is happening is that the director David Slade they had lined up for the Daredevil movie bailed at the last minute leaving them forced to let the rights lapse.  And I'm beginning to have my doubts about the FF movie happening either.
