ICv2 has a new sit down interview with Mike Richardson of Dark Horse Comics this week in which they talk about the comics market and manga. Or more specifically, graphic novels and shoujo. Richardson talks about the growth of manga in the bookstores being attributed largely to shoujo and how that's now abating due to the sheer amount of product out there. At the same time, he finds Dark Horse relatively unaffected by it due to the kinds of books they bring out which have been steadily growing but not tied to that particular genre. The discussions about the quality of shoujo material out there and the ability to retain that audience is definitely interesting coming from someone long established in the comics world and has survived and grown in it.
Mike Richardson also talks about an issue that's dear to the hearts of many with the topic of illegal scanlations and how they view it as well as talking about their plans with CLAMP and their relationship with the group. He states, "We’ve come up with a program that is very different from what’s out there, and I think is perfect for these economic times and more closely mirrors how material is released in Japan. Not to mention the fact that we’re releasing it worldwide, which has never been done. Usually the material comes out and then it’s licensed country by country. There are a lot of exciting parts to this, and we’re very excited to be working with them."
