THE DARK KNIGHT Director Returns!

Christopher Nolan talks to the press about the blockbuster and what's next

It's the biggest movie of the summer and the second biggest domestic release of all time. 'The Dark Knight' shattered box office records and wowed fans. Then, director Christopher Nolan took a break, leaving fans, press and studio executives to gossip and speculate about what may be next for the director and his mega-franchise.

Now, Nolan has resurfaced and is talking exclusively to the L.A. Times and he's talking about the success of the first movie and where the next one might go.

"I can’t get my arms around it, to be quite frank. It’s mystifying. It’s terrific but at the same time it’s a little abstract, the numbers are so big," Nolan said of the near billion dollar world box office of 'The Dark Knight'.

"The biggest thrill for me would be, with the number of people who have gone to see the film, how 'The Dark Knight' stood on the shoulders of the first film, how we were able to build the audience up and build the story up from the first film. That was really exciting to see."

Nolan also said that, contrary to popular belief, he had no master plan for a part three that would prominently feature the Joker. However, Heath Ledger's amazing performance certainly made him consider it.

"Really and in truth, I only deal with one film at a time. I find myself sort of protesting this issue a lot. We’ve never attempted to save anything for a sequel or set up anything for a sequel," Nolan said. "That seems improbable to some people because, particularly with 'Batman Begins,' the film ended with a particular hook [with Jim Gordon showing Batman a Joker playing card announcing the arrival of a new villain in town]. But for me that was just about the excitement of people leaving the theater with the sense that now we have the character up and running.

"Then I got excited about seeing where that character would go. It was planned in advance, but it followed in that way. But we tried our hardest to really do everything in this movie that we would want to see the Joker do and to get that in the fabric of the story as much as possible. We wanted the Joker’s final taunt to Batman to be that they are locked in an ongoing struggle because of Batman’s rules. There’s a paradox there. Batman won’t kill. And the Joker is not interested in completely defeating Batman because he’s fascinated by him and he enjoys sparring with him. It’s trapped both of them. That was really the meaning of it. Of course what happened is Heath created the most extraordinary character that you would love to see 10 movies about. That’s the bittersweet thing. It was incredible characterization. It is a bittersweet thing for all of us."

So, is Nolan planning to do another one?

"There are two things to be said. One is the emphasis on story. What’s the story? Is there a story that’s going to keep me emotionally invested for the couple of years that it will take to make another one? That’s the overriding question," the director said.

"On a more superficial level, I have to ask the question: How many good third movies in a franchise can people name," he asked, laughing. "At the same time, in taking on the second one, we had the challenge of trying to make a great second movie, and there haven't been too many of those either. It’s all about the story really. If the story is there, everything is possible. I hope that was a suitably slippery answer."

Man,

I though this title meant Nolan is back for a third Batman...

In any case, I don't think anything will make the third movie as big as the 2nd one. The unfortunate death of Heath Ledger has made this movie more popular then ever and the role itslef just solidified the meaning of having good acting in a role.

Now, people expect this same type of buzz over the movie so, I don't expect the same feeling for a third. It's nothing bad but, whatever they do, it will not be as ''magic'' as the 2nd one.

Time will tell.

Yeah, not many good threequels out there...

As Batman becomes an outlaw, it would make sense that

A) Other vilgilantes would come in to bring him down... and

B) He would team up with another outlaw, someone like Catwoman to take on both these new 'heroes' and the main villain of the piece, Black Mask or The Riddler, the latter more of a quizzical serial killer than his usual goofy self...

The idea of both Nolan versions of DC Heroes like Green Arrow and Black Canary and maybe Villains such as Killer Croc, Bane and others may end up with a huge three way battle with people switching sides and maybe the death of more characters, i seriously think if they make a third film, it needs to finish this franchise off and make an nice trilogy, all tied up with a big bat-bow...

:-)

I can think of a few good "threequels".  LOTR comes to mind first, maybe that isn't fair as it is really one big story.   The Bourne movies did all three of its movies well.  I could name a few more, but I understand what he meant.   X3 was kind of crap for the X-Men franchise.

It's interesting.  If Nolan is being truthful in his answers here than that would mean that he's driven by the passion that he feels for his projects and not the almighty dollar.  This rings true for me when I watch his movie because it shines through.  I think the reason why a lot of sequels suck is because the studio throws a lot of money at the cast and crew and then the motive changes.  I can see what he means, "I can’t get my arms around it, to be quite frank. It’s mystifying. It’s terrific but at the same time it’s a little abstract, the numbers are so big."  He probably didn't think that it would happen and now it's daunting.  How do you do better?  How will the critics and the fans view a third movie with out comparing the success of the second?  That's some heavy shit.  It's like going to Vegas to have a good time with buddies and you put down a bet and win big then everybodies expecting you to bet it again and hit the HUGE jackpot.  So you think to yourself, "do I walk out now and take what I've done and the current glory?  Or do I let it ride and if I fail will they think the same of me?"

On the other hand, if he's just blowing smoke and his brother is already typing up a treatment for the third movie and this is just to quel all the rumors and calm people down due to his absence, then it's all bunk and we should ignore it.  It seem logical since a lot of people now-a-days have been leaking "false" information to stir up a buzz and to throw them off.

In any case one thing is certain for sure.  He's got a big desicion to make.  And we are all holding our breath to find out what it will be.

It's the obvious choice for WB to have Nolan helming the third installmant of the BATMAN series.

Isgrimner:  Yeah, I agree, The Bourne movies did well.  So, did the LOTR films...Yeah, X3 was crap!  I don't know, but just by looking at the actors' facial expressions in X3 such as Jackman, Stewart, Berry--I was surprised she came back--and the rest, they didn't seem like their hearts weren't in it to do the third film other than getting a big check.

A few good "threequels":  There's also those Harry Potter movies--Depending on how one's views it.  And don't forget Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean films.  Finally, I guess one could add that horror/slasher film series, SAW.

In my opinion:  I believe Nolan will direct a third Batman movie...Please, enough of the casting rumors...No, it wouldn't be cool to have Johnny Depp as the Riddler or Angelina Jolie as Catwoman.  That would be like almost twenty years ago after the Summer 89' release of Tim Burton's BATMAN...There was such speculation of wanting to see Charlie Sheen---Yes, Charlie Sheen--as Robin the boy wonder, or Robin Williams as the Riddler.

Joker will be back, there's no way around it.

hanso 10/28/2008 9:30:04 AM

Rocky 3 is awesome!  I pity the fool who don't think so.  There are some nice 3rd films out there but that's they are more the exception than the rule, if you go into the superhero genre then it gets even worse.  Superman 3,  Batman Forever, X-Men 3 and Superman Returns (aka the other Superman 3).  Some of ya might even throw in Spiderman 3, I can't cause it ain't as bad as the others I've mentioned.

I'm glad Nolan is back talking bout Batman even if he hasn't signed on officially yet.  I had read a quote by David Goyer awhile back saying that back when Begins released they didn't talk Batman until October of that year when they started shooting around ideas.  It's October now and Nolan has resurfaced so hopefully that means they already talking about the plan for the next one.

What I like about this interview is that from what Nolan is saying, it may lead to the next Batman coming even earlier than I expected.  I thought he do something smaller like he did after Begins released, I know he was rumored for The Prisoner.  The guy says he loved shooting in IMAX, so that might make him skip a smaller film and dive straight to the next Bat film.

Hobbs 10/28/2008 2:11:04 PM

I don't care what he says, WB is going to throw so much money at him he'll be back for a 3rd one.

What about Revenge of the Sith?  Though I rip on it as often as possible it was still a 1000 times better than those first two crappy movies.

fancyboy 10/28/2008 2:52:19 PM

Nolan will be back for the third Batman movie. My predictions:

There will be no Robin.

There will be two villains for Nolan's Batman: the Riddler and the Killer Croc.

There will be a Batman visitation of the Arkham Asylum to see the Joker to solve an old riddle.

Batman will be hunted and chased by Gotham's Finest until a tragic crisis force them to work with and depend on Batman.

Selina Kyle will make an appearance as Bruce's new love interest but not as Catwoman (that will be in the fourth film).

Superman will make a brief appearance acknowledging and meeting Batman (this will establish a competitive tie-in interest against Marvel's plans with Captain America, Thor, and IronMan films leading up to the Avengers film. Remember the movie, "I Am Legend"? That's a preview of the "World's Finest" - Batman and Superman.

That is all. So said me!

WISEGUY562 10/28/2008 3:01:58 PM

fancyboy, hope you're right. But Nolan seems set in "keeping it real" to my chagrin. If Superman and Killer Croc make appearances that would be a welcome surprise to me but a hard left for Nolan. We'll see
