Seems a bit odd to be talking about a rerelease before the film even leaves theaters in its first run but here we are. The Hollywood Reporter says that Warner Bros. executives are planning to rerelease their blockbuster The Dark Knight into IMAX theaters in January, the height of the Academy Award voting season. While there is no confirmation that it will be getting the second run in standard theaters, if it does, they will also have the opportunity to beat out Titanic as the #1 Blockbuster of All-Time.

At the current moment, without adjusted inflation, The Dark Knight has $512.8 million in domestic sales while Titanic is on top with $600.7 million. With this rerelease, the upcoming December release on DVD and Blu-Ray may not stop the Bats sequel from passing that $600 barrier after all.

Warners domestic distribution president Dan Fellman acknowledged ongoing talks with IMAX executives about the prospect of restoring the film to some number of giant-screen venues in January.

"It's just a matter of bringing it back as a reminder for people," a source told the trade.

Would the voters need a reminder with the momentum that this film has? What are your thoughts?

O.K., I enjoy The Dark Knight and over again, but to re-release it back into theaters in January is just the WB's way to milk it for every cent it can get. This film has broken records, and set new standards around the globe. It should not be tainted by telling people to spend more money when by that time they have it on DVD. To do that would take away the mysticism it has released upon us all by having us realize "we are" spending money instead of enjoying a good story. From a fan's perspective, it would also be one last chance to see Heath Ledger on the big screen one last time in his final FULL role, and once again make people remember he is no longer with us. The Dark Knight owns us all, don't force it to Dominate us as well. I have rambled on enough, what do you all think?

Shit Yeah! I figure by Jan. I'll be ready to watch it on the big screen again (saw it a measly 3 times in reg. theaters). I haven't made it to the local IMAX yet, so I'll be goin' in Jan! BTW in case you can't tell I respectfully disagree with archrayne666.

Money whores. I guess it would be cool if they re-released it with extended scenes maybe, otherwise, who cares?

I saw it in IMAX the first time around. I'll be damn glad to see it in IMAX again.

It would be insane not to re-release this one. It's a money maker and there's a lot of Oscar buzz. You have a chance to capture a very important mark in movie history. This film will never be "tainted" by re-release. It will give me a break from watching it and I'd be happy to go see this one again in January. Funny... My two favorite directors have the top grossing films of all time!??? I know how to pick'em.

When is it coming out on DVD and BLU-RAY?
hanso 9/11/2008 4:47:05 AM
Hell yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!! Nothing wrong with bringing it back for Oscar season, plenty of movies have done it.
I don't think this move is about getting more $$ out of the Dark Knight so it can beat Titanic but more about a possible best movie, best director and best supporting actor noms.
So bring it back but don't delay the Blu Ray release which I figured would be around December.
Last TDK beat Polar Express as the most money making movie in IMAX history, so put another record in TDK's name.
Gauley knows whats up as we all do.
