DARK KNIGHT Rescues Another $23.1 Mil Friday

Even with new wide releases hitting theaters this weekend, it's hard to stop the train otherwise known as The Dark Knight. The film has been toppling records since it debuted last Friday and another one is set to shatter by Sunday or Monday, this one being the All-Time Fastest to $300 Million.

The critically praised sequel starring Christian Bale, Heath Ledger and Aaron Eckhart pulled in another estimated $23.1 mil for Friday, a full $12 mil over the second placed comedy Step Brothers.

This means Knight has an eye popping $261.7 mil in only 8 days of release, Maniacs. The previous record holder for All-Time Fastest to $300 Million was Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, which took 16 days. Obviously, The Dark Knight will topple that one.

Dark Knight Records:

1. Biggest Theatrical Release: 4,366
2. Biggest Midnight Debut: $18.4 mil
3. Biggest Opening Day: $67.2 mil
4. Biggest Friday Opening: $67.2 mil
5. Biggest Sunday Performance: $43.5 mil
6. Biggest PG-13 Opening Weekend: $158.4 mil
7. Biggest Opening Weekend: $158.4 mil
8. Biggest July Opener: $158.4 mil
9. Fastest to $100 Million: 2 Days
10. Fastest to $200 Million: 5 days ($203.8 mil)
11. Biggest Summer Opening: $158.4 mil
12. Biggest IMAX Debut: $6.2 mil

We'll discuss it further in tomorrow's Mania Box Office Report.

This film is just killing everything. It'll beat fastest to 300mil by six days, that's just amazing. I don't see it beating Titanic but with 300 mil in 10 days it looks like it could be the second film to break the 500mil barrier. I'm just amazed by the way it's being received.

what's the foreign BO take? Is TDK being worshipped globally as it is in US?

after multiple viewings, I can say that TDK is:
1. rewatchable
2. a deep and emotional rollercoaster
3. solid entertainment
4. in my top ten list of all films
5. historic

Excellent movie deserving of the success. I thought all the hype over Ledger was just that until I saw this movie. He was excellent as the Joker. One thing though, I admit in almost everyway these new Batman movies are superior BUT what's up with backlash against the orginal Burton Batman. When Micheal Keaton was selected to play Wayne/Batman everyone was like, What? and he ended up being excellent in the dual role. Even better was Jack Nicholson. He was violent, funny, and well developed. He made the character broad in appeal -nearly everyone thought this at the time. I could not bring my kids to TDK but I love to watch Batman with them.

raith, where your comment go?

Anyway as surprised as I've been by TDK's success I would be just as surprised if it beats The Mummy next week. I think it'll hold strong but I believe The Mummy will win out.

X-FILES title "I Want To Believe" meant one certainty. I beileve we gonna get our asses handed to us. Mulder turns to Scully and says, "in fact I'm holding my ass in my hands right now. What about you Scully?" So now that puts the proverbial nail into the coffin of the X-FILES franchise til the time is right for audiences will be ready for it again since they lost the core audience years ago when it stayed on the air too long and got too silly to even bother to follow anymore.

Next week MUMMY 3. And that film being a success will depend on what mood people will be in for Rob Cohen. Will it topple DARK KNIGHT?? Stay tuned. In the meantime Hanso, guess we'll add STEPBROTHERS and X-FILES to the latest DARK KNIGHT bodycount.

Continue to enjoy the DARK KNIGHT ride ladies and gents. I plan on seeing it 5 more times so I can take my viewings up to 8.

Appearently Wiseguy I foolishly deleted it when I meant to add MUMMY 3 in the mix, so I just do it shorter. MUMMY 3 should win, because it does have a following for its franchise, but we are talking about Rob Cohen.

I rarely comment here, but I just spent $54 dollars to get 6 of us to see this move, and all I have to say is that I would spend that amount again just to see the disappearing pencil trick again on its own.

RaithManan • Jul 26, 2008, 10:02pm •
Yep George, and that pencil disappeared as fast as our money being spent to see DARK KNIGHT.
