So what's next for director Tim Burton and his frequent counter-part Johnny Depp once Alice in Wonderland officially wraps production? Producer Richard D. Zanuck tells Collider that the duo will be getting to work adapting cult '60s supernatural TV series Dark Shadows. Depp has been developing an adaptation of cult series created by Dan Curtis with an eye towards starring as the vampire patriarch Barnabas Collins. John August penned the screenplay.

Plot Concept: With over 1,225 episodes, "Dark Shadows" was a highly atmospheric, spooky soap-opera that featured gothic horror staples like vampires, monsters, witches, werewolves, ghosts and zombies that ran from 1966 - 1971 and featured actor Jonathan Frid as Barnabas Collins. Depp will play the role in the modern update.

Has to be a typo, 1,225 episodes over a five year span? So they had a new show Monday - Friday and never took a week off? Those shadows must have been pretty dark.........

Excellent! If there ever was a project suited to the Goth Duo of Burton and Depp, this is it.

Raulendymion, Dark Shadows was a five day a week soap opera like the ones that currently run. Unless it was a holiday, there was always a new episode everyday. Just like those today, sometimes nothing might happen for two or three episodes but people talking about essentially nothing but it still ran fresh all the time.

This I would pay to see...Dark Shadows was always a guilty pleasure for me growing up as a kid! Depp and Burton will be excellent in doing this...I just hope they don't make it campy....I really enjoyed Depp when he played this kind of role in Sleepy Hollow, and even In Hell was good....so if that kind of atmosphere can be done, then this could be pretty good.

Burton and Depp, a match made in goth heaven.

Another reason for Depp to pancake make-up on his face and play dress-up to fulfill his drag-queen fantasies.

Good news good news.

Yes they had a new episode mon- fri for 5 years.  It was a daytime soap like days of our lives except it had witches and undead and ghosts and time travel.

I think Depp will make an excellent Barnabus Collins.  I'm a bit worried about how Burton will hack it up tho. He destroyed Planet of the Apes.

Batman777 12/4/2008 7:14:17 PM

WOW...I am old enough to remember DARK SHADOWS on TV..yes it was a 5 day soap opera

mckracken 12/4/2008 11:01:13 PM

yes i believe the 1225 episode count is a HUGE typo. IMDB lists Jonathan Frid is listed as Barnabas Collins for a grand total of 596 shows (wich I'm assuming was the total and that he stared in all of them... not sure... no other actor on Dark Shadows has anything near that total, Grayson Hall (Dr Julia Hoffman) is listed at 475 Dark Shadows episodes.

anyway, enough of this Burton/Depp teamup... i guess it works pretty well for burton AND Depp but c'mon... i counted at least EIGHT movies that have these two... did i miss a few?

EvilMonkey 12/5/2008 4:33:49 AM

From what I remember, Barnabas wasn't in it initially other than a portrait or mention of him.  I think he was chained in his coffin for a while.  I'm not sure when he was released.
