Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures (MGM) has signed Darren Aronofsky to direct and David Self to write a new installment for its RoboCop franchise. Aronofsky, the director of The Fountain, and Self, the writer of Road to Perdition, make a formidable creative team, fast tracking the RoboCop motion picture and spotlighting it as one of the most anticipated new films for 2010.

The announcement was made today by Mary Parent, Chairman, Worldwide Motion Picture Group, MGM.

In making the announcement Parent said: "Darren is undeniably one of the most talented, original and visceral film makers, and David is one of the greatest writers in Hollywood. All of us at MGM couldn't be more excited."

Phoenix Pictures' Mike Medavoy, Arnold Messer, Brad Fischer and David Thwaites will produce "RoboCop." Cale Boyter, Executive Vice President Production at MGM will oversee the project for the studio.

Phoenix Pictures' Chairman and CEO Mike Medavoy said: "After making the first 'RoboCop' at Orion more than 20 years ago, I'm thrilled to be helping to return this character to the screen with our partners at MGM and through the eyes of Darren Aronofsky and David Self."

Phoenix co-presidents Brad Fischer and David Thwaites added: "With a filmmaker of Darren Aronofsky's vision and imagination and a writer of David Self's caliber, we are poised to bring to the screen an entertaining and provocative film, which will now be under the creative guidance of two of the best storytellers working in our industry today."

The original RoboCop, which premiered in 1987, was "part man, part machine and all cop." The film's storyline focused on the future of law enforcement as a terminally wounded cop returns to the police force as a powerful cyborg haunted by submerged memories. The original film was nominated for two Academy Awards -- Best Film Editing and Best Sound.

I don't mind a new Robocop, but calling Aronofsky and Self two of the best storytellers is a little much. I admit that Aronofsky did great work with "Requiem for a Dream", but thats pretty much it on his list and Self wrote "Road to Perdition" which was a good movie, but nothing that I'd consider the guy who wrote it one of the best. All things aside I'm sure it will be a decent movie, I mean Aronofsky and Self would have to suck something fierce not to beat "Robocop 2 and 3".

I'M NOT TOO EXCITED ABOUT THIS MOVIE.. I MEAN COME ON I COULD MELT THIS GUYS' ARMOR WITH MY PLASMA GUN

Yes I can see it now: Robocop hallucinating in the form of a montage, in which a number of artistic yet provocative shots play out in a messy editing style. Deep.

Its just not Verhoeven. Robocop had this biting commentary on 80's consumerism and narcissism. It was right for the time. Other iterations since have been diluted.

To see Aronofsky attempt a genre/action/sci-fi/superhero film would be weird. I'd agree it can't be worse that 2 or 3 (as Bmfstunner said), but its like having Michael Bay direct an arthouse flick-- a really odd fit.

I'm guessing he's going for that Christopher Nolan vibe.

LMAO thats so true Predator. He cant hold a candle to you. Not one bit. But This is a movie that I would love to see redone correctly. I love part 1 and part 2 the only thing I really enjoyed about it was Cain the evil robot. BUT part 3 was the biggest piece of shit there was. If I was to take a shit and compare it to Robocop 3 my shit would look like a beautiful flower compare to it. The only thing would crack me up about part 1 when I use to see the trailer for it when it came our was when they said he was super fast and then they show him walking from a exploding gas station slower then a old lady LMAO!!!!! I was like ohhhhhhh yeah hessss pretty fast LOL.

AAAAHHH WOLFMANX HOW I WOULD HAVE LOVED FOR YOU TO TAKE A SHIT AT MY HOUSE AND CALL ME INTO THE BATHROOM TO SHOW ME WHEN I RENTED THIS MOVIE.

IT WOULD HAVE TO BE REDONE QUITE WELL BEFORE I COULD GET INTO IT
PART ONE WAS COOL.

MY FAVORITE PART IN PART ONE IS WHERE THE GUY RUNS HIS TRUCK/VAN INTO THE TOXIC WASTE AND STARTS MELTING.. WHAT A GREAT DEATH SCENE

I never thought I would see a remake of “RoboCop” nor did I ever think there was anyone who could make it more violent/graphic, but hell if anyone can it would be Darren Aronofsky.

I just hope they give some credit, cameos or roles to Weller and Smith (hell just put Smith back in as the bad guy).

Just another example of lazy-ass filmaking.
"Darren is undeniably one of the most talented, original and visceral film makers, and David is one of the greatest writers in Hollywood. All of us at MGM couldn't be more excited." If this is the case why do these guys have to do a remake? If they are as good as Mary Parent says they are why don't they come up with something original?

"I'd buy that for a dollar!".

I read the film would be set 20 years after the first Robocop and set in Los Angeles. Don't know if that's true or not.

I don't mind seeing Murphy back in action but they gotta have him say "Dead or alive you're coming with me". Excellent.

I'm not too familiar with Aronofsky's work but I'll believe he's directing this when it finally happens. He seems to be attached to projects and then for some reason he leaves or it doesn't pan out. I think he was rumored to direct an episode of Lost and that never happened. Batman Year One, The Fighter(?) some other examples. We'll see if he sticks around for this one.

I enjoyed Pi & Requiem. Haven’t seen anything else by Aronofsky. Plan on seeing The Fountain at some point. I was pissed when it was first announced as a remake but I’ve since heard the same thing hanso has, that this is set 20 years after the Robocop program has been halted. A continuation I could maybe stand. originaldave you are dead on about why the first was so good. 2 was only okay & 3 sucked, in large part because they lost that point. 2 carried it a little I guess. It’s been so long though and we’re living in an age that is screaming for some biting sci-fi satire to maybe wake people up that this has potential if the folk involved remember what made the first so great. I’m hopeful.
