Welcome to the latest edition of the DCG Artist Spotlight!
Our victim today is the DCG Award winner for Best New Artist of 2005, darthbakpao(Iskandar Salim).
Comics2Film (C2F):When and why did you start making photomanipulations?
Iskandar Salim (IS):Late 2004, it was the excitement over the new Superman movie that got me into these.I started with some awful manips using photos I found on the internet.
C2F:What software do you use?
IS:A combination of Poser, CorelDraw and Photoshop. WhyCorelDraw? It is more comfortable to do all basiccostuming there, at least for me.
C2F:What is your background in art?
IS:I graduated from Visual Communication Design at theUniversity of Trisakti, Jakarta. I've also beendrawing since I was a kid. Superheroes are always myfavorite themes because I grew up reading mostly DCand Marvel comics.
C2F:What is your favourite of your own artwork?
IS:"Retropolis"and "ATribute to Christopher Reeve".Especially the later one, because that's where Istarted to push my limit , I had always thought that Icouldn't do portraits. It is also "the most requestedprints" by some Superman fans. Off course I didn'tsell it!
C2F:What do you think is your greatest strength as an artist?
IS:Attention to details and patience. I take my time andgo extra miles to make sure it is worth showing topeople.
C2F:What is your weak point as an artist?
IS:Easily bored and too lazy. I have a lot of ideas, butthey would just ended up in my head and never see thelight. I also have this tendency of quickly bored withsomething. It often resulted in a lot of unfinishedworks.
C2F:Which DCG artists' work do you look forward to?
C2F:Who are your favourite comic book or mainstream artists?
IS:Alex Ross, Bryan Hitch, Adam Hughes, Harold Shakuishi,Naoki Urasawa, Milo Manara, the late Ganes TH (Was oneof the best Indonesia's comic artist back in the olddays).
C2F:What is some of your favourite work by other artists?
IS:Some of them are Android's. His Thundercats works leftmy jaw dropped.
C2F:What inspires you? Where do you get your ideas from?
IS:Movies, magazines, the internet, basically anything.
C2F:What is your favourite part of doing a photomanip?
IS:Photomanip is like dressing up people in superhero'soutfits. We all have our own 'dream casting' when itcomes to that. So the most fun is to see how it turnedup to be and the way people respond to your works.
C2F:Do you have any advice for aspiring artists?
IS:Be patient. I understand the urge to show people howbadass your works are. But if you rush them, you wouldlikely to regret showing them too early because theyshould get much better responses if you take your timewith them.
C2F:What are your favourite comic books?
IS:Recently I'm reading this japanese comic called "20thCentury Boys" by Naoki Urasawa and it became one of mymost favorite and certainly the best one that I hadever read. I would highly recommend it to anyone.
C2F:You've done a lot of (uniformly excellent) images of Superman.Which do you think is your best?
IS:"ATribute to Christopher Reeve". I like that one verymuch.
C2F:What is it about Superman that makes you keepcoming back to the character?
IS:The new Superman movie! But I think it won't bepermanent. Once the 'excitement' has passed, I wouldlikely to find another theme to work with. Or maybe, Iwould just quit this business and pay more attentionto my real works.
C2F:Who are your favourite comic book characters?
IS:Spider-Man! I'm a big fan of Spidey. I used to watchthe Nicholas Hammond's Spidey movie over and overagain when I was a kid. It was cheesy but thewall-crawling stunts where they used real people onwires were great!
