According to Variety, David Goyer has signed on to direct the upcoming X-Men spinoff, Magneto.

In the film, a young Magneto seeks revenge on the Nazis who killed his family while befriending a young Charles Xavier.

"It's the story of Magneto's life, and it will span some years," said producer Avi Arad.

Lauren Shuler Donner told USA Today that, a new actor will portray the younger Magneto, but Sir Ian McKellen will nevertheless reprise his role for the film.

Goyer plans to alter a script for the film which was written by Sheldon Turner.

It's great that McKellen is attached... nevertheless... SNORE.

I think that Goyer's an excellent screenwriter, however I'm not so confident of his skills as a director. Blade 3 would have definately benefitted from a better director...

I had no interest in this film....until NOW. Goyer's a very talented writer, and Blade Trinity proved him the be a talented director, as well. Flash's loss is Magneto's gain!

Meh. Goyer lost me when he did BLADE: TRINITY and later CBS's THRESHOLD. I'm beginning to feel sorry for Sir Ian McKellan, and yet strangely relieved for the FLASH film.

Goyer is hit and miss..... at best... not that interested in a Magneto vehicle anyway. Even if this is good, it won't be a Box Office smash that Marvel is hoping for. Who cares about Magneto as anything but a foil to the Xmen?

This is so stupid, it puzzles every area of the mind. Nobody wants a Magneto film. What the hell is next...a Lex Luthor film??? Please!!! The drugs must still be flowing freely in Hollywood...and no...Goyer is not a good writer. He's a hack who got lucky writing comic book scripts when nobody else was. One of his hack scripts got made...and the film was a low budget luke warm hit. That was the first Blade film of course--now every idiot exec in Hollywood who doesn't understand comic books, but wants a quickie big cash haul at the box office is hiring this guy hoping to get just that, a big cash haul at the box office. And I'll tell you this, the Goyer penned Batman Begins was a self important bore fest...with zero since of humor!!! Yes, the film was totally anal in that regard. Batman was self pitying...the villains were self pitying, the butler was caught in the middle, and the girl who supposedly loved Bruce Wayne seemed indifferent to his problems...putting her views of prosecutorial penis envy, and the grandeur surrounding it, in her quest to save the city--before, and ahead of Bruce's survivor's remorse--born from his depression over his parents' murders. That's why Spiderman and its sequel have crushed Batman Begins at the box office.--no contest!!! Spiderman was just about the misunderstood loser guy who wanted to get the under valued girl. See, she may have been just a girl to be used and thrown away by every guy from her dad to Harry, but Peter saw her as a priceless soul. He loved her more for her spirit, than her body. It was about the joy of loving someone...and hoping to be loved back--all wrapped in a fun humor filled package that reminded one of the suprisingly funny, romantic and adventure filled parts of Back To The Future. In other words, it was just a nice feel good pocorn movie. Goyer's Batman Begins however, was just a soul-less and joyless movie---And trust me, Magneto will be worse. Why??? Because Goyer is a terrible director: Blade 3 is Exhibit A in the proof department??? Case closed!!!

Is there a comic adaptation that this guy isn't attached to? This movie won't get made. Scripts will be written and there will be a lot of talk about the film, but Goyer will eventually leave the project to move on to another property that probably won't ever see the big screen. Magneto is a great character, but only when he's playing off Xavier and the X-Men. Other than that he's a big refrigerator magnet. We saw enough of his past played out in the X-Men movies (the flashback of the concentration camp and the numbers engraved on his arm) to know why he feels the way he does about humanity. Magneto had a great story arc in the X-Men movies, but it's time to move on to other villains and other stories.

Well I disagree with the statement that he is a crap Screen writer, Batman Begins was a good movie, sorry it was and if you don't think so you are the minority on that one. I found Blade entertaning and Blade 2 is one of my top five comic book movies. Now onto the matter of directing I believe Blade:Trinity was a promising story but executed very very poorly. He has no eye for directing, Blade 3 was a total mess crappy camera work , poor acting, poor lighting, all responsiblities of the director. As far as Magneto film goes this is terrible news(not that I'm am holding my breath for it) I may check it out if it get great reviews when it comes out on DVD......maybe.

The guy should stay OUT of the director's chair. Plus, this concept was already done...wasn't it called Hannibal Rising? BTW, what is the adversion to making more X men movies without Berry and Jackman?
