David Tennant to leave "Doctor Who"

By Karl Schneider     December 29, 2006
Source: Hollywood Reporter

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the BBC is refusing to deny various press reports saying that David Tennant will be leaving the show Doctor Who after the current season finishes filming.

"He is totally committed to filming the third series, which goes on air next spring, but it's too early to say anything about any future series," a BBC spokeswoman said. "I don't think a fourth series has even been commissioned yet, although there probably will be one."

Multiple British tabloids have suggested that Tennant plans to leave the show following this year.

KJ's Take:  Wow.  That would be too bad, Tenant is a very talented actor and the show wouldn't be the same without him.  Then again, the replaced his assistant, and they will replace him if he leaves.  Show must go on as they say.

Wow, what a headline. Too bad it has no basis in reality at this point in time. Tennant has NEVER been into confirming or denying anything with this show. More so after the debacle with Eccleston. So, because he says nothing, everybody just assumes he's gone? Don't you guys ever get tired of making piss poor assumptions?

This may be considered sacrilege by many hardcore sci-fi fans, but I've never been big in to Dr. Who. I'm not sure why, the show just never really grabbed me. I did see an episode w/ Tennant the other day and it did seem pretty good. It would be a shame if this rumor did have some basis in reality...

Yeah, I was scared there, too, for a second. Especially since I finally saw the end of season 2 a few days ago. Then I saw that their sources are the British tabloids (who makes Fox News look fair and balanced). I hope Tennant stays on for a good, long while, even though, for story purposes, I'm glad Eccleston left. Bare in mind, Eccleston was a better Doctor, but I'm glad he left after completeing one fantastic season, instead of pushing his luck. And, no, it's not considered sacrilege by sci-fi fans to not like Doctor Who. It should be. But, it's not.

I thought he signed up for a 4th season a long time ago? And he has to stay for at least a 4th season because I'm really sick of every season ending with someone leaving. This show is wonderful. The second season dealing with the Doctor's love for his companions was nicely done and every little while there was forshadowing of what was to come.

"I thought he signed up for a 4th season a long time ago?" As the BBC spokesman said, the show has yet to have a 4th season confirmed. So, I doubt any actors are signed on yet if the season isn't officially a go. At this point, it's likely elementary, but it is actually very rare for the BBC to do as they did with Doctor Who when they approved the 3rd seasons before the 1st season finished. We'll get word about the 4th season soon enough, probably before the 3rd season starts. Whether Tennant is a part of that 4th season remains to be seen, but I won't believe anything until it's official, and I certainly won't listen to what British tabloids say.

So, a whole article based on a report from the Sun? What next, quoting from the Weekly World News? Nice piece of journalism... this Schnieder guy is shaping up to be the next H.L. Mencken!

Tennant and Davies have a very good relationship. If Tennant is looking for other options, then it's only because he's bored. Still, this is the first I've heard of it. A lack of admission or denial isn't exactly "truth." Still, Who and Torchwood are doing so well now in the UK that the BBS might do what they can to keep Tennant on, even if he decided to leave.

I haven't been into Doctor Who since the mid-80's but, according to Time Lord mythology don't you get only so much regenerations until one actually "dies"? If Tennat leaves how many regenerations does that make? Unless they pull a Dallas and make his prior adventures all a dream and hit restart which would be lame...

David Tennant is the Tenth Doctor. A timelord has 13 lives total. He could always have a son....eh? eh? I feel bad for Paul McGann, the Eigth Doctor, who only appeared in the 1996 TV movie. Here you get this dream role, and the pilot doesn't even get picked up. However, his version of The Doctor lived on in the magazine for nine years, making him the longest serving Doctor (with, by far, the least amount of work).
lister 12/29/2006 1:55:55 PM
Well, he could already have a son... seeing as how he does have a granddaughter. And his half-human genetics may somehow subvert the limit of 13 lives. Who knows what they'll do...
