DAY OF VENGEANCE: INFINITE CRISIS SPECIAL #1

Infinite Milking

DAY OF VENGEANCE: INFINITE CRISIS SPECIAL #1

Just when you thought the countdown to INFINITE CRISIS had finished and could get on with your life, DC brings you four epilogue one-shots to THE O.M.A.C. PROJECT, VILLAINS UNITED, THE RANN/THANAGAR WAR, and, here, DAY OF VENGEANCE -- $3.99 each and not included in the new trade paperbacks of said miniseries. While this special is certainly a good read and even worth the exorbitant cover price (with 48 pages), one can't help but wonder why DC didn't just extend each miniseries by an issue or two. It just seems like the company wants to create yet more INFINITE CRISIS tie-ins.

Circumstantial complaints aside, this special presents the magic heroes of the DC Universe capturing the demons and other beasties that escaped from the exploded Rock of Eternity after the now-crazy Spectre destroyed it and a hell of a lot of other things. After the new Shadowpact helped expel Calypso, the Spectre, still without a host, seeks to destroy the remaining Lords of Chaos to further his quest to eliminate all the magic in the universe. Nabu -- the spirit that once occupied Dr. Fate -- knows that only a severe personal sacrifice will bring an end to the Spectre's reign of terror. But, that won't happen before Zatanna and a bunch of the magic heroes expel some demons and kick some ass. One other thing: you probably won't see much of Captain Marvel for a while. He doesn't die, but he'll probably be preoccupied for a bit.

Willingham picks up right where he left off with the DAY OF VENGEANCE miniseries and doesn't let up for a second. This issue trumps the climax of that series and then some. And by now, I can honestly say I don't hate Detective Chimp anymore. You have to grow up sometime. Yet, it still perplexes me that DC didn't include this in the numeration of the miniseries, because it concludes the miniseries nicely.

Justiniano's pencil-work (yes, he only has one name) serves the story well, striking a nice balance between superhero exaggeration and straight realism. This special is worth a read, but it still strikes me as a bit of a ploy on the part of DC to appeal to completists. Still, if you dug the miniseries, pick this one up.

I liked the timing, but it would have been nice to hold out on the collected edition(s) until these were released, so they could be included. Each of the Prelude minis were supposed to build up to the crisis series. If this issue were placed as the conclusion of DoV, than some of the dramatic impact of the fall of the Rock would have been lessened. I also like concluding/continuing some of the prelude specific stories outside of the already packed (but well done) crisis series. The DoV series introduced us to the shadowpact, psycho-spectre, and the fate of magic, so it makes it nice to focus on that specific thread here.
