DC Comics Gay Character Revealed

The Golden Age Green Lantern, Alan Scott, is the latest comic book character to be 'outed' as gay.

DC Comics have announced Alan Scott - the original Green Lantern, who first debuted in 1940 - will be reintroduced in the New 52 as homosexual.

The comic's writer James Robinson says, "I was sort of putting the team together and I realized one of the only downsides to relaunching the Justice Society as young, vibrant heroes again was that Alan Scott's son was no longer going to exist in the reboot. I thought what a shame and then it occurred to me, why not just make Alan Scott gay?"

Green Lantern's 'outing' follows Marvel's current announcement/ storyline that Alpha Flight member, Northstar will propose to his longtime partner, Kyle Jinadu.

Check out Mania’s Comicscape: Cheating Hearts Column where we discuss the pros and cons of this current trend in both Marvel and DC Comics.

Thanks to jedibanner for the submission.

This makes sense because his weakness is wood and he became a GL via a flame.

LMAO, good one dnfalkenheim, yeah not to be outdone DC has to grab some spotlight. This was the character that the rumor mill was circulating so not surprising. The reason James Robinson gave though was lame. Since the original Alan Scott had a gay son and they don't have him in the new 52 why not reinterprete Scott to be gay. The new 52 IMO has been great for comics and definitely good for DC but this will be one of the downfalls. Appearenlty Robinson isn't don "reinterpreting" the justice society either so I guess they'll be more announcments like this.

This whole idea of gay characters is dumb. I get it, the gay community wants more exposure but shoving it down our throats (yup, pun intended) everywhere we turn is getting annoying.

I keep wondering ´bout all the fuzz DC made with this subject, since is not even the "Real" Alan Scott, he´s the one from earth 2. All seems now like just another publicity stunt from DC.

How is having gay Characters "shoving it down our throats"?

"Having Gay characters is OK, as long as I don't have to read, see, or hear about any gay characters..."

And the thing with DC is there are so many reboots, retools, retellings, redones, and retards that who knows what character is from what Earth and when.

Hey DC go for broke. Have it that Superboy is a Camdus clone of Superman who they geneticly engineered to be gay and to make it better have Superman be hopelessly attracted to him and dumps Lois. This entire gay thing is getting overblown...(hehe I said blown).

As said before, when the inclusion or pandering to certain demographic begins to diminish or detract from the storytelling. that is when have gone too far.

violator14 6/1/2012 10:08:37 AM

Btw, does this mean there will be more green cylindrical shaped constructs in DC comics now??? I dont even wanna know what he'll be doing alone on a friday night to himself with that ring.....

Gauley when the comics are doing it in a vain attempt to appear PC, then it is too much.

Introducing a new character who happens to be gay, fine. But stop trying to rewrite current history to all of the sudden find out someone is out of the closet. It is insulting to comic fans and deteriorates the intregrity of the storytelling. Again see the embelished example above, that is the crap that is getting lame.

We get it, 10% of you are gay, we don't CARE. We don't make professing being Hetero as a focus point, why should being gay? And if we are going to go that route, be all inclusive damnit. Get the trannys, bi, lipsticks, crossdressers, albinos, gingers, and special needs people all to have a character in the comic books. It is pathetic and pandering, and bugs me because it takes away from comics are supposed to be into making them a political message. STFU and just tell the damn stories will ya? We don't care what positions, party affliations or other polical bullshit your support. Just. Tell. The. Story.
