Double-diner: For you:

Morality -

1. conformity to the rules of right conduct; moral  or virtuous conduct
2. moral  quality or character.
3. virtue in sexual matters; chastity.
4. a doctrine or system of morals.
5. moral instruction; a moral lesson, precept, discourse, or utterance

1. a pretense of having a virtuous character, moral or religious beliefs or principles, etc., that one does not really possess.
2. a pretense of having some desirable or publicly approved attitude.
3. an act or instance of hypocrisy.

a person who is utterly intolerant of any differing creed, belief, or opinion

As per Websters. So the notion that someone who is intolerant of intolerance is any better is wrong. Still just as much a bigot as anyone else. Because they are intolerant of someone else's opinion. And that is what makes them hypocrits. Because the reasoning is usually because it is popular opinion to go that route.

And just for note. Your definition of morality is not really accurate. Morality is defined by the culture, environment and society by which it is percieved and used. I.E. The morals of the Middle Eastern countries are vastly different than the ones here.

And for the record finally, everyone is entitled to their opinion, period. And they are entitled to it as much as gay people are entitled to not be harassed, abused, condemned or otherwise chastized for their lifestyle. You don't have to like, accept, associate, or socialize with gays, LGBT, or any other sect you don't want to. That is your right and you have the right not to take SHIT for that choice also. It is called Freedom, rights work both ways. I personally can't stand religious people, but I am also not a fan of the overly zealous, flambouyantly gay types either.

I believe that is what gets people mad the most. Seeing the representation of what gay means to popular culture to most. The images we get in parades, activists activities and other public imagery when the only gay people you see are dressed in outlandish costumes. If you think about it, it almost sounds like comic-con. This goes against what is said by the LGBT community, "we want to treated like everyone else". Well if that is the case then the imagery you have representing you should act like everyone else and not outlandish. It is called PR guys, I am not saying it is right. I am saying it is reality and human nature.

So both sides of this issue are correct, gays do deserve to treated with respect. AS DOES EVERYBODY. I hold the right to exclude pedophiles, necrophiles, beastility practicers, polygamists, murderers, criminals, and the other refuges of human scum. But decent, law abiding, good poeple all deserve respect. Regardless of who they chose to sleep with.

My original problem with this still stand, it feels like DC is allowing the sacrifice of the story for the goal of making a political point. The focus has become on the fact that "The Green Lantern is gay" instead of that they rebooted the Earth 2 Green Lantern and he happens to be gay in this incarnation. And that detracts from the story. And as a fan of comics and GL in particular that saddens me.

I might be a conservative but I am also a human being. And I recognize that humanity will always be intolerant and scared to radical change, it is just who we are as a people. It is in our nature.

@Tevii, just seen your point. Bit late but thanks.

I haven't read the bible.  But I remember a few important quotes.  My favorite is "Let he who has never sinned cast the first stone."

I don't believe that Jesus was the son of god.  But he had some pretty good ideas which are worth listening to and taking to heart.  He taught about tolerance and forgiveness and loving your neighbor, even if he was different from you.  I know Christians who take these teachings to heart and they are pretty nice people.  Unfortunately there are Christians out there who think the bible gives them liscence for hatred and violence against people who are different from them, especially if that difference is spoken of in the bible as wrong.  They forget that this issue is between the person they percieve as a sinner and God, and is NOT THEIR BUSINESS.  If they could spend more of their time examining their own souls and correcting their own faults and trying to live virtuous lives according to their beliefs, and less time trying to correct the faults of others they would be closer to godliness.

As for Green Lantern, it doesn't affect me much.  I'm not that familliar with the Alan Scott character.  Though I do think that LGBT characters deserve more representation in comics.

I do have some more characters to add to the already existing number of LGBT characters in DC comics.  Lighting Lass and Shrinking Violet were shown sharing a bedroom (and presumably a bed since there was only one there) in a recent issue.  It was unstated, but pretty obvious to me that they were being portrayed as a couple.

Right or wrong, moral or not.....It will all be a mute point by this time next year after DC, gets its YTD sales report back on GL.

This thread has enetered into the ridiculous..Gauleyboy, its your right as an American, to have the right to speak your mind and choose what lifestyle you wish to live. But, who is to say if Wise is right or you are wrong? I for one do not agree with the gay lifestyle. I believe it is unnatural and ultimately , a self destructive way of life. But thats my opinion, and its not based on hate, its based on fact. Two gays cannot procreate naturally together. Theres a reason for that. So, if GL wants kids, he'll have to adopt.

karas1 6/2/2012 10:50:12 AM

Calm down guys.  One of the appeals of Mania is that the maniacs are calm and collected and don't call eachother names even when emotional issues are discussed.  If Keithdaniels and I could discuss prayer in schools, an issue in which we are both passionate and diametricly opposed, without being rude, you can do that too.

karas1 6/2/2012 11:00:43 AM

XeroWarp, my father used to say that gays shouldn't marry because they couldn't procreate.  I asked him if marriage should be denied to hetero couples who couldn't or didn't want to procreate.  Should an infertile couple be denied marriage?  My grandmother remaired in her '80s, no kids coming there, and he didn't object.  He said that was rediculous.  I asked him what made it different and he couldn't give me an answer.

It's not an arguement based on logic.  There is NO logical reason why two men or two women can't form a couple and live together and enjoy all the rights and priveleges acorded to a legal spouse in our society.  Because some religions deem it a sin, some people have a very ingrained emotional response to it.  They feel deep in their bones that it is WRONG because their parents and their religious leaders and theor authority figures and their holy book told them that when they were young children.

If people looked at it logicly they would see that what some other couple does has no affect on them or their lives and they should mind their own business about it.  What they feel about it is their business. If they don't like it, fine.   When they count on their illogical feelings to make laws that affect others there's a problem.

But Gauley, I've been reading the comments and no one who was opposed to the character being gay said so because they didn't like gays, even those opposed to the lifestyle aren't making homophobic rants. They didn't like it because it seemed like a major publicity stunt as you said yourself, and I'm trying to be respectful when I say this, and many others on this board who are for it jumped down the throats of the rest as being intolerant and bigot. Hell you used the word intolerant to describe those that aren't agreeing with you ten times in one post. If you read the other posts which maybe you have but I'm guessing some of the others have not you would see that they took issue with this being a publicity stunt not the fact that the character is gay. As has been pointed out by many people who opposed the "out Alan Scott" DC already has some gay characters and they work just fine. In fact Batwoman is a major seller. I just think it's wrong that you have labeled so many bigots while preaching tolerance about this issue. You say so in your last post,

I AM intolerant of intolerance, I admit it, and never pretended to be anything better. Everyone is entitled to an opinion.

But you also admit that you made that assumption about the people on this board based on reading their posts. I haven't read one post by a person who opposes this that has said something that screams of bigotry. On the other hand everybody who is for this issue has labeled everyones who is opposed to the Alan Scoott issue a bigot. It doesn't make any sense to me. But that's just my opinion. Your saying you stand up against intolerance but no one posting has made any homophobic rants.

And fianlly the wisdom of Hanso never ceaes to amaze me. What would Xenu do if he saw us fighting this way?

Wiseguy 6/2/2012 11:21:52 AM

I personally don't care who's gay or not. That doesn't influence me in anyway. Two adults can do whatever pleases them behind closed doors. It's the liberals and their bullshit agenda. No one here is advocating lynching or beating up gays but the minute one comments of how they disapprove and find the practice immoral they're labeled bigots. The intolerant of intolerance is the biggest bullshit line I've ever read, in other words accept what I believe or we'll try to bully and  shame you into capitulaing or shutting up. To that I say FU

XeroWarp 6/2/2012 11:22:54 AM

Karas, your 80 year old married couple logic is completely laughable. Within the Hetero society, life will live on, naturally. The same cant be said for Homosexual. Your species would ultimately die off. Just because someone does not agree with you doesnt make them biggots or hateful. Peace.
