Gary Gygax, who co-created the fantasy game Dungeons & Dragons and helped start the role-playing phenomenon, died Tuesday morning at his home in Lake Geneva. He was 69.

He had been suffering from health problems for several years, including an abdominal aneurysm, said his wife, Gail Gygax.

Gygax and Dave Arneson developed Dungeons & Dragons in 1974 using medieval characters and mythical creatures. The game known for its oddly shaped dice became a hit, particularly among teenage boys, and eventually was turned into video games, books and movies.

Gygax always enjoyed hearing from the game's legion of devoted fans, many of whom would stop by the family's home in Lake Geneva, about 55 miles southwest of Milwaukee, his wife said. Despite his declining health, he hosted weekly games of Dungeons & Dragons as recently as January, she said.

"It really meant a lot to him to hear from people from over the years about how he helped them become a doctor, a lawyer, a policeman, what he gave them," Gygax said. "He really enjoyed that."

Dungeons & Dragons players create fictional characters and carry out their adventures with the help of complicated rules. The quintessential geek pastime, it spawned a wealth of copycat games and later inspired a whole genre of computer games that's still growing in popularity.

Funeral arrangements are pending. Besides his wife, Gygax is survived by six children.

Wow ExperiMental,

I didn't think you were that type of person. You having a bad day or something?

This is dedicated to someone passing away..Much like Heath Ledger or any other press report about someone passing..

And it did say he is survived by a wife and six children.

Didn't expect that eM. You've never shown that type of posting here before..I'll chalk it up to a bad day.

experiMENTAL, you are a complete idiot. I'm not going to be as nice as Jarrod. Read the article. He was married and had six kids. And if you're just being a jackass, then I guess you're still a complete moron.
There is no excuse for what you said.

As for Gary, great mind, great ideas to put old myths into a fun past time. I persoanlly haven't played since the mid eighties, but I really enjoyed it. I also had many computer games of D&D and loved every one.

I'd say pretty much both story driven video games and tabletop games would be much different today if it was not for Gary.

I sort of feel like being back in high school when Gene Roddenberry died...

This weekend I will definitely fire up the DND cartoon series and mourn his passage for d12 hours.

Sigh.

While I missed eM's comment, it's probably for the best.

When my cousin (and one of my best friends) Gary - just coincidence - died nearly a quarter century ago his mom gave me all of his D&D stuff. I must admit that for many years, it had a great effect on my life and in fact helped me deal with the loss.

Thanks Gary for inspiring years of fun and imagination.

First off: my condolences to his family and friends. Secondly: a big thank you to Xagyg for sparking a unique industry and for helping me to enjoy lots of good times around the gaming table for the past 25 years. I had an exchange with him on the ENworld messageboards a couple of years ago that kind of gave me the impression he was bit of a curmudgeon. I suppose I would be too if the company I helped to create was jerked out from under me. Thanks for the good times Gary, may you rest in peace.
