I am loving The Lies of Locke Lamora. Thanks for recommending it.
Things that are great about it:
1. The whole Godfather aspect. It's a great original premise for fantasy.
2. The great characters
3. Magic as background - it's a scientific professional field involving the mundanities of life
4. Alien world settled by humans
It was a little hard to get into at first, because I couldn't figure out where it was going. We aren't inside Locke's head for the first few chapters - but we are inside everyone else's. It goes back and forth between past and present. Locke isn't particuarly likeable and neither is anyone else. But, once you settle in, it's just great - and the kind of book you want to read more than once.
