Director Jan de Bont's Blue Tulip Prods. is closing in on a deal to produce a science fiction miniseries for the FX cable netwirk called EATER.

The potential four-hour series will be based on the book of the same name by Gregory Benford. The book and series tell the story of an astrophysicist and his wife who discover that a black hole is making its way through space with mother Earth sitting in its path.

While talking to Variety, de Bont spoke of the original book's author, saying, "What has always drawn me to Gregory Benford, apart from his amazing achievements in the field of experimental and theoretical physics, astronomy and future space travel, is his ability to give us a unique insight into what motivates and drives the mind of today's scientist."

Benford himself weighed in on the developing project, saying, "I am thrilled to have my newest book in Jan's hands. He respects getting scientific facts and ideas right, aware that science fact can also be much stranger than science fiction."

De Bont is also developing Benford's six-book THE GALACTIC CENTER SERIES as a regular TV program for Viacom.
