What a difference a year makes. That's what the manga/anime distributors over at Viz must be thinking. Last June, they held a nationwide digital theater distribution in 166 American theaters for their Naruto the Movie: Ninja Clash in the Snow and only pulled in 6,000 in sales. So, what happened this year with screening Death Note in 300 theaters on May 20-21? Multiple the ticket sales by more than 10. The Associated Press Japan is reporting that the live-action adaptation of the series sold 65,000 tickets on 300 theaters last month, 20,000 of them pre-sold in advance and the other 45,000 sold on the screening days.
Viz Pictures Director of Marketing Manami Iiboshi noted that the NCM Fathom promotional agency had the Death Note film's trailer running in theaters across the nation for a month before the screenings.
With these successful numbers, Viz is thinking about releasing the sequel Death Note: The Last Name this fall in American theaters while the original hits American DVD markets.
