DEATH PROOF Crashes Into Dvd

While Grindhouse may have failed at the box office by being released on Easter weekend against so many family comedies, that's not stopping them from thinking of creative ways to still make money out of it. Weinstein and Dimension Films have already released Tarantino's Death Proof as a seperate film in the overseas market. Sometime in the near future, they will then release Rodriguez's Planet Terror also in a seperated format.

According to Amazon's listings, they've also set the release date for Death Proof on Dvd format as a seperate purchase. The second half of the original Grindhouse film will be hitting dvd shelves on September 18, 2007. Still no word on when Planet Terror hits the dvd shelf. Also, no word on a fully combined Grindhouse Dvd version with both movies and faux trailers attached. When they get release dates, I'll let you know.

Grindhouse didn't fail at the box office because it was released on Easter weekend.

Not buying it individually. I want the WHOLE experience again. And thought I know it is highly unlikely, I'd love another Grindhouse theatrical experience. That was probably the most fun I've had in a theater in a long time.

Merlin, I'm with you when you're right. I'm sick of hearing how Grindhouse "failed" at the box office. Loathe to admit it I'm sure, there other criteria on which to ultimately judge a movie a success or failure. They won't get another dime from me if they don't release them the way they were meant to be seen: back-to-back with faux trailers and missing reels. It's GRINDHOUSE!
amateurscientist 6/22/2007 12:06:37 PM
this SUCKS. yes, the whole experience WAS the film! both movies together with the trailers in between is what made this great. this whole "failure at the box office" is a tremendous insult, to say nothing of a slap in the face that this is to BRILLIANT director Robert Rodriguez. this also says NOTHING of the big cheat that actually happened at the box office that weekend that STILL NO ONE HAS REPORTED: THAT WEEKEND BLADES OF GLORY (PG-13) OPENED AND AT MANY THEATERS YOUNG PEOPLE BOUGHT TICKETS TO BLADES THEN WENT TO SEE GRINDHOUSE!!! THIS HAPPENED. regardless, this splicing the movie stuff and splitting the dvds is just dumb. I want GRINDHOUSE the way I saw GRINDHOUSE, and I'm not buying multiple copies just to satisfy the Weinstein's money jones.

amatueurscientist, I DID report that was the reason Grindhouse failed back when it did fail at this websites Box Office Report. Wallyrus, It failed because it was released on Easter weekend against 3 family movies that ranged in length 1 hr and 30 minutes. Those 3 movies had 6-8 showings per day where as a 3 hr 20 minute Grindhouse had only 3 showings per day in most theater cases. It failed because of a Easter weekend release and the running length of the movie. I'm not insulting Grindhouse by stating the facts here, guys. I think Grindhouse is a fucking cinemetic masterpiece. Probably one of my favorite movies in the last few years for its merits. Loving the film and stating the facts are seperate though. Jarrod Sarafin

I'd rather watch "Ready to Wear" again than buy or rent this disaster of a turd.

Not that I'm a fan of Tarantino and Rodriguez...but I hate to see fans robbed!!! Hence, I propose a new strategy to get fans what they want in terms of Grindhouse. Audiences should start a campaign to only buy Grindhouse...the way it was released in theatres...and the only way to get it is via Bootlegs of the original!!! Yes...buy the Bootleg of the bastard and spread it all around to your friends!!! BTW...Grindhouse failed because it was too long and the subject matter that the two filmmakers choose to riff on was uninteresting!!! I mean, who in the mainstream audience really wanted to see the trashy Planet Terror...or Kurt Russell crying like a baby at the end of Death Proof???!!! Fact is, for most grind house movies, they tried to give a little more in story to make up for what they didn't have in budget. Sure the stories may have been a mess, but it wasn't for the lack of trying. However, Planet Terror and Death Proof were unfinished premises in search of a stories--stories that never showed up. Then there is the issue of promising the audience a truly adult forbidden fruit experience and not delivering on it!!! I mean...it was rated R, and there wasn't even any nudity, or sex in it. This...for a film that was marketed as a Hard "R" movie???!!! WTF???!!! So much for getting the repeat audience of horny fan boys coming to see this turkey over and over again!!! Not that these are grind house films, but let me tell you what the formula for the old Friday The 13th movies was. The producers knew that teens like to see these movies to get scared: It's an excuse for a girl to hug on to her boyfriend and for him to pretend to protect her...and cop a free feel while he's at it. The point is...he wants it...and so does she. Adding to the mix, producers would add nudity...and sex scenes to ramp up the effect. This is the reason why such films were so popular among teens in the late 60's, 70's and 80's. These movies, from the grind house films, to the early slasher flicks...some one in the same, helped teens to bridge the gap...between talking about first base and sex, to helping them knock-off a piece in the theatre, or at drive-ins during the movie. That is what brought them back to these films...in the end...it was all about sex!!! In regard to Grindhouse, they totally missed that point. It was Spring Break time, a fave period for horny teens and college kids...and Tarantino and Rodriguez served them up an A-Sexual horror movie???!!! When word of mouth got out, this film was dead on arrival after the first screenings!!! There was no Hard "R", in the Hard "R"???!!! Just so you know, I didn't make up this theory about horror movies...it turns out that the creator of Friday The 13th admitted to it. The nudity, sex and violence in his movies was a formula which he believed attracted horny kids for the reasons I cited above. Psychologically speaking, the human brain releases the same excitement chemical when it witnesses, and or, is involved with fighting (violence) or sex (erotic stimuli). Hence, whether they knew it or not, the audiences for these films were being fed a powerful psychological chemical cocktail...as potent as a Marvin Gaye or Barry White song in terms of sexual stimuli!!! No wonder why fictional, and or, non fiction books, and programs about serial killers are number one with most women...from teens on up...just like romance novels...as it stimulates the same naturally occuring chemical releases into their body systems...as is found in sex. Again, this is a scientific and medical fact...not a theory!!! Tarantino and Rodriguez failed to employ this formula into their film...and besides its over bloated length, I see this as the biggest reason the film bombed at the box office!!! If you are going to claim to be a Hard "R" movie, then I suggest you hold-up your end of the bargain...and deliver a real Hard "R"!!!

Kurt Russell cryin' at the end was brilliant.

That's funny dude!!!

You just know they are going to release each of these films seperatly and then re-release them together as a bundle or as they were originally. Now as for a Hard R I thought I'd heard they had trouble getting this the rating they wanted and I assumed they cut some stuff that they could put back in for the DVD releases. Then in the films just as we were getting to the potential sex and nudity part we get a missing reel. Hmmm! I don't know if there was actually truth to this notion I have really, but it seemed to make sense. I agree that it was a mistake to release this on Easter weekend and that under age guys were buying tickets to some other more family friendly film and then seaking into this one. Still the way grindhouse films went though is that they had no huge audiences, but played to guys that wanted to see this stuff again and again over a long time. I imagine DVD sales will look much better than ticket sales for a multitude of reasons. Now I agree that the "theory" that metalwater puts forth, but that is all it is is a theory that is supported by evidence. I am sick and tired of people talking of scientific or medical fact, when these so called facts are never anything more than either the best current theory supported by the evidence or just the best supported theory. All science, medicine and also psychology is are works in progress. We do not know everything about any of these things, but we use the best methods we know at the time. It is a work in progress afterall and then we do research or experimentation and look at our findings to alter the current theory or come up with a better one or to support the current one. As time goes on the theories become more advanced as we get closer presumably to answering all of the questions. In the meantime there is nothing absolute about any of this. There was a time when the theory that the earth was flat was accepted as scientific fact too. As long as people just accept these things as fact rather than being open minded enough to see the possibilities in other theories they actually stand in the way of progress. You put six psychologists together with this information and they are going to come up with six different theories using entirely different terminology. The fact is we do not know everything about the psychological connections between excitement generated by fear or excitement generated by sex, but evidence suggests that there are connections including the release of certain chemicals in the brain that as far as we know don't have other purposes. We are talking about endorphines I think. There are such chemicals that come from eating chocolate too and other things I will not go into here. There could be other things happening too that have not been studied. Some have successfully taken advantage of these findings in film, which gives further credence to the theory because of it's apparent success. If the formula works why not use it. I had not heard that serial killers are number one with most women, but I do know women who are into that stuff.
