From the very first one until now, the Halloween episode of The Simpsons has become a FOX staple. If you can believe it, The Simpsons will be celebrating the 24th “Treehouse of Terror”. To celebrate this momentous occasion, Guillermo del Toro was brought in to do the opening couch gag.

Del Toro spoke with Entertainment Weekly about his inspiration for the Halloween episode. Are you ready for this, it was Mad Magazine. “They would try to cram so many references in. You as a kid could spend an afternoon on your bed with your magnifying glass going through a frame of Mad magazine and finding all these references to this and that.”

The Simpsons‘ annual Halloween special, airs this Sunday only on FOX. Enjoy the opening couch gag below.

Always loved these episodes and love watching them every year even though I don't watch Simpsons anymore.

I'm also happy they actually air these before Halloween. For the longest period of time. the new Simpsons seasons would start in November, therefore these Halloween epiosdes were shown after Halloween. Lame.

That opening was so much funnier than any of the last 8 years of the simpsons.

Sad, but true jedibanner.  Always enjoyed the Treehouse of Horror episodes, but the show as a whole has gone way way down quality-wise.
