Has Guillermo del Toro's dream of adapting At the Mountains of Madness finally come to fruition? Years after he expressed interest in taking on the H.P. Lovecraft story, back before any incursion into middle earth, Deadline NY is reporting Universal has finally given the helmer the go ahead on bringing the tale to the silver screen. It will be Del Toro's first film shot with 3D tech and the website reports that it will be produced by none other than James Cameron. Bringing the two together perhaps is the reason why Universal has said yes, despite their reservations about adapting such a tale for mass audiences.

Guillermo first set the project up at DeamWorks back in 2004. He wrote the script with Matthew Robbins but that's being retooled as we speak. When Universal Pictures and the helmer/producer made a massive distribution deal back in 2007, his adaptation was part of it. Pre-production is set to get underway immediately and shooting could begin as soon as next summer.

Plot Concept: In the Lovecraft tale, a gruesome discovery made during a scientific expedition to the South Pole in the 1930s hints at the true origin of mankind having come from elder gods from another planet. Bad things happen when those life forms are awakened.

Sound off below, Maniacs.

Supposedly Del Toro had a Elder Things cameo in Hellboy 2, I think in the Troll Market, I sent in a picture of what I think it was. Still need confirmation though...

I wonder if this will be as a period piece or set in modern times?

i'll wait for trailer

I never thought we'd see this greenlit. This has to be rated R which I think was the reason studios didn't want to go ahead with it. Either that or a very very strong pg13. I think even GDT himself said that was one of the main obstacles

I will be there opening night for the I-Max 3D showing whenever it opens.

Lovecraft the Anglophile must be spinning in his grave.

Its my understanding that it is a period piece. I believe Del Toro said that would be the only way he would do it. He wants it to be as acurate and true to HPL's book as possible. Indeed the elder Thing was in the Troll Market... That made the film for me. Im a massive Lovecraft fan and cant wait to see this. Del Toro has expressed several times over the years the passion and desire he has to do this right. Why is Lovecraft spinning in his grave (which I plan on visiting in the next few weeks)? And what does him being an anglophile have anything to do with it?

I'm there with you Wiseguy.  And I don't need no damned trailer. (Come up with a more original response, Calibur.  You're repeating yourself.)  As a matter of fact, I don't want to see anything on this movie before I sit down in the theater.  I have that much faith that GDT will deliver.

HPL was a huge anglophile who defintely did not like non-whites. Having a Mexican adapt his work is why I am saying he is spinning in his grave. It would be like a Strom Thurmond biopic directed by Spike Lee. That is all.

@Wiseguy-Thanks for the trailer man! It was pretty cool. Asgard looks amazing, and all the characters are pretty convincing. However, I'm a little iffy on the action. Thor doesn't really seem all that powerful in this trailer. Im not 100% sure what Thor can do in the comics, but I hope there is more to it than just punching people and using the Hammer as a blocking weapon. So trailer does look good, but did not blow me away.
