Del Toro clings to HELLBOY

Hot off the heels of BLADE 2, Guillermo del Toro hopes to make his next project an adaptation of the Mike Mignola comic

While the on-again/off-again status of the live action HELLBOY adaptation has desensitized the comic's fans to any news of the production, director Guillermo del Toro insists that he is still behind the project.

"[HELLBOY I wrote and I will direct," maintains del Toro. "I would hope to do that and then you will see a movie that, for me, combines two universes. A movie that is as big and as fast and as full of sound and fury as BLADE, but is also personal to me. I mean, BLADE says nothing about the world as I see it. I tried to bring a little bit more nobility to the [vampire] characters of Nyssa and Nomak and create visually interesting stuff, but with HELLBOY the great thing about it is, thematically, it's my autobiography."

And while the director contends he'd like the Mike Mignola created comic to be his next feature, he is perfectly aware of the glacial pace at which studios move when dealing with bigger budget productions.

"You know, the moment the movie goes beyond $40 million you're not in charge of your destiny," says del Toro. "If that doesn't happen for any reason whatsoever, I'll go and do a smaller movie that I wrote that I've been trying to do for 10 years called MEPHISTO'S BRIDGE. It's something that I've been trying to do for a long time and it will be again more personal, but within the same genre and even creepier than [BLADE 2]."

However, if a HELLBOY feature does see the light of day, the genre director confirmed that actor Ron Perlman will indeed be portraying the horned hero a commitment the performer has already agreed to.
