Whatever villain that J.J. Abrams has in mind for his upcoming Star Trek sequel, we know one thing. The role won't be played by Benicio Del Toro. Vulture is reporting that despite numerous reports which had Del Toro seemingly locked in for the gig, negotiations have fallen apart this week and the actor has reportedly turned it down for now.

We have no official announcement behind his reasoning to exit the bargaining table but it has been rumor madness in regards to the character he would have been playing in the 2013 summer tent pole. While Abrams has been holding the casting decisions close to his chest, LatinoReview threw their hats into the theory that Del Toro would have been played Khan Noonien Singh, the very character we all saw Ricardo Montalbán play in the 1982 sequel. The Khan rumors have been popping up ever since the sequel was first announced and have been continually denied by Abrams and his team at Bad Robot. We all received another denial on the Khan theory with the LatinoReview report as well, with Abrams telling HitFix that the rumor is "Not true."

At the moment, the confirmed cast seems to be Chris Pine, John Cho, Simon Pegg, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, Alice Eve and Peter Weller. Both Eve and Weller are playing undisclosed parts, with the former playing a new character. With Del Toro deciding to drop off the negotiations for this next installment, the search is on for someone to play the villain.

The Star Trek sequel flies into theaters May 17, 2013.

Of course it's Khan. You have to use the same villian as the original movies series  :Star Trek 2 the Wrath of Khan lol

Darnit!! i was hoping he'd play Dr. Gonzo from Fear & Loathing In LasVegas....  =(

At least he won't get the top of a phaser lodged into his head.  Dang it Del Toro, it's Star Trek.  It's a legend.  Come back!  lol.  Okay.  I'm done.  Del Toro would have made a great Khan or as Abrams already suggested, Trellain.  I'm just wondering if he'll come back to the negotiating table again, or if there's a Plan B for Abrams.

Del torro would have made a qreat Klingon (kor, kang etc) but not Khan. He just doesnt fit the role.

Del Toro asked for too much in his negotitations. He wanted orphaned Laotian slave girls to answer his every beck and call and to come to work to the studio in a chariot pulled by hamsters.  Some guys just push it too far.

Who is your speculation for a new actor for the role? I say Zac Effron. No...how about Eddie Murphy? He's a Trek fan. Dwayne Johnson? He actually would be a good pick. But since Khan is supposed to be from India, why not get some great Bollywood actor for the role.

Personally, I hate the Khan idea. I would love a new Vulcan villain. Someone so fanatically logical and unemotional he would be worse than any of the usual Trek adversaries who are always motivated by some trauma or need for vengeance. A Vulcan would just be logically moving towards some goal regardless of any pain and suffering he might impose on others.

And it goes without saying (or I guess it does), that Abrams and the writers need to put Roddenberry's vision of Trek back in.  It is human society that has grown up beyond its childhood and can now live with itself and others in peace & prosperity (more or less).

I don't think it was every going to be Kahn.  That's too predictable and Abrams doesn't like to be predictable.  He probably had something new in mind.

I don't want to see Kahn.  There is literally a brand new universe to exploit here.  Don't retread.  Do something new.

Well thats too bad, but I'm still looking forward to more new Trek Movies. AND for all you die hard Trek (ers, ies, whatever) who complain that the new Trek misses the mark and doesn't gel with Roddenberry's Trek, remember that ST2:TWoK (which is largely thought of as the best Trek ever) was accomplished without Roddenberry, and in fact he was removed from having anycreative control over it. Enough with the "We need a more boring Trek" complaints, NO, no we don't. If thats what you want, go watch ST:TMP and have fun

monkeyfoot,

I read your post about a ruthless Vulcan in the other Trek thread, and I think it has a lot of potential. Kinda like Sybok, except without emotion (and an interesting character). My only question is what kind of motivation could compel a Vulcan to such tyranny? I suppose the roots could be planted with Vulcan having been destroyed in this film series, and this Vulcan's goal is to save his race somehow.
