For years now, director Guillermo Del Toro has been trying to bring H.P Lovecraft's demythology of the Cthulhu legend to the big screen. Unfortunately, Warner Bros wouldn't finance his vision time after time and the project stalled leaving Del Toro to move onward to Pan's Labyrinth and Hellboy 2 while fans of H.P Lovecraft eagerly awaiting this adaptation had their hopes dashed. Not anymore, says Latino Review. Once Del Toro officially wraps up his post production work on Hellboy, he will be directing Lovecraft's AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS. While it is rumored that  the WB did finally agree to finance the project in the end, Universal Pictures has come into the picture and has a deal ready to go with Del Toro.

Plot Concept: The film is an adaptation of the H.P. Lovecraft novel, which features a chilling recollection of an Antarctic expedition's uncanny discoveriesand their encounter with untold menace in the ruins of a lost civilization.

This will not be filmed before the impending June 2008 strike, Lovecraft fans. Hellboy 2's post production will likely take the bulk of his time leading into the early months of 2008 and Del Toro has already said he'll take a few months off after the film which will lead into the possible strike. But he may begin work on this long awaited project by the time the Hellboy sequel hits theaters ( August 1, 2008) if the strike has finished and all goes to plan.

So what is the story about? Actually I just got the synopsis at Wiki, It sounds pretty damn cool and with Del Toro doing it woa! watch out! Kill Wonder Woman! and any hopes of a movie...

that a movie which has been stalled in production might still get made if it doesn't get stalled by the possible strike. It may also have been financed by one production company or the other. Cthulhu fans may or may not be disappointed by this news depending on the possible outcome of potential future events. or not... Maybe.

Is it just me, or is this strike thing like crazy....they plan a strike almost a year in advance, I mean, what's that about? I think strikes are stupid and rarely solve anything. Its like a way of saying my dick is bigger than yours.......oh, and this movie sounds good too, if it gets made.

for those interested a movie named "The Call of Cthulhu" was made by the HP Lovecraft Historical Society... made in black and white... non-talky and little budget... less then an hour... very well done... anyways check out there site or netflix or whomever... its worth a look

ashsaytr, I have The Call of Cthulhu on DVD, and it's one of my favorite movies of the last few years. I highly recommend it for any fans of Lovecraft and film history. The movie is a great "what if" sort of movie, based on the premise of "what if" a silent movie had been made based on The Call of Cthulhu in 1926, the same year the story was first published. It's a terrific premise that a group of mostly amateurs pull of on a micro-budget (about $50K). It's also the most faithful Lovecraft adaptation to date. Most Lovecraft adaptations have gotten mangled over the years, and most of these are absolute garbage (though every now and then one stands on its own merits, like Re-animator). I'm hoping that Mountains of Madness is just as faithful to the story as Call of Cthulhu (though obviously with a bigger budget). I also hope they make it a period piece set in the 1920s, a time when the Antarctic had not been so thoroughly mapped and explored.

After seeing Del Toro's amazing imagination come to brilliant life in Pan's Labyrinth, I can't wait to see this.

I think it'd be cool to see Cthulu on the big screen; though i'm confused. I thought that I already saw a trailer for a Cthulu movie, but just a teaser without a proper name. It was from some robot-pictures or bad-robot pictures company. It started off with prople at a party and some guy filming going away messages for one of them, then a loud weird yell/cry/shriek and everybody runs outside. When they get out the head of the statue of liberty goes flying past and you see some cars fly overhead. it ends with another one of those cry/shriek/yells. Am I wrong in thinking that was a teaser for Cthulu, and if I am, does anybody know what that teaser is actually for?

ryanwareham, would I be correct in assuming that you're being facetious in your comment? There's been a lot of speculation that the upcoming JJ Abrams movie is a Cthulhu movie, but I've read elsewhere that those rumors have been shot down. Which isn't to say that the movie won't be Lovecraftian, just not actual Cthulhu. Just because a trailer hints at a monster without actually showing it doesn't make it a Cthulhu movie.

Sounds like the perfect man for the perfect job. If Cthulhu has anything to do with it, there will be no strike...or else someone's flesh will be turned inside out.
