Director-producer Guillermo del Toro has signed with United Artists to develop the cult British science fiction TV series THE CHAMPIONS for the big screen, reports the Hollywood Reporter. Del Toro will write/director/produce the adaptation alongside Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner's C/W Prods.

Plot Concept: The series, which ran for 30 episodes in 1968-69, revolved around the adventures of a trio of secret government agents whose lives were saved when their plane crashed in the Himalayas and they were rescued by an advanced civilization. The civilization also bestowed them with superhuman abilities. The series originally was produced by ITC, the company behind such British shows as "The Saint," "The Prisoner" and "Thunderbirds."

First time ever hearing about this, but it does sound interesting and with del Toro in charge you know it'll turn out good.

I don't know why I didn't see this item on this page before. I just sent in an email about this. Sorry, Jarrod just ignore it. I used to watch reruns of this show as a kid. I liked it. They were like superheroes but with no costumes. This could definitely work as a new movie done in the Bourne realistic style. For those of you not familiar with the show (which means just about everybody), some clips are up on Youtube. The one I have listed below is interesting. It is the intro of an episode. After the opening credits (which I like) they show two of the characters demonstrating their abilities. Take note of the bodybuilder in the scene. It's Dave Prowse, later to fill the suit of Darth Vader. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4fsoeAC_gRw
