Del Toro 'Interested' in DEATHLY HALLOWS

One of the directors initially pegged for the job of HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN was Guillermo del Toro. Due to a busy schedule and not really knowing which direction the series intended to go, Del Toro wasn't very interested in that particular project at the time. Instead, it went to his long-time friend and co-producer partner, Alfonso Cuaron. Years later, now that the series' tone is much darker and officially wrapped up its final novel over the summer, it seems that Guillermo del Toro is now interested in the job for the final film. While talking to Edward Douglas, he had this to say on the prospect of helming the last film...

Spoiler Note: If you haven't read DEATHLY HALLOWS and don't want to know spoilers on the story, I'd advise you leave at this point. While the quote doesn't say anything specific, it's safe to assume that spoilers could be discussed in the comment section attached to this article.

"They came to me once, for the third one," Del Toro told us, confirming earlier rumors. "When I read the books before the movies were done, I always pictured Charles Dickens. They were very Dickensian. The situation of Harry Potter reminded me a lot of Pip from 'Great Expectations.' I saw them as deeper, more creaky, more corroded, but they were textured very differently when the first two movies came out. They were so bright and happy and full of light, that I wasn't interested."

"They seem to be getting eerie and darker, and I'm up to be the one who kills twenty guys," he said with a laugh, possibly referring to the plot of the last book, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," which has yet to have a director attached to helm. "If they come back to me, I'll think about it."

Not having been a fan of the series at first I must say that they indeed have gotten better by the movie. I myself wouldn't go to DelToro, He's a good director but he's not the be-all-end-all. Not to mention that I would still be holding a grudge for being turned down once and the fact that he says "I'll think about it". I'm sure Warner'll pick a good director and it'll be a hit regardless. Hopefully they'll stick with Yates.

I'd like to see them go back to Chris Columbus for the last one.

Guillermo del Toro would do a good job as a director for this franchise but the person I would like to see direct "Deathly Hallows" is a former director of Harry Potter. Alfonso Cuaron should be offered this final movie. He was the one that gave the franchise it's different darker look so it's only fitting he should direct the final installment. He was offered Goblet of Fire and passed on it so maybe he's done with Harry Potter but I think it'd be cool for him to take on the final film.

Guillermo Del Toro is a good director, but if you want to make a really dark movie go with Rob Zombie. Just watch House of a Thousand, Devil's Reject, or the New Halloween and you'll know what I mean.

Yes, yes, yes. I really like Del Toro's work, and think he would be outstanding for this film. I also would love to see Tim Burton (Helena Bonham Carter is involved now so who knows, right?), or a return for Cuaron. I think Del Torro definitely would be near the top of my list of potential directors.

Del Toro would be an excellent choice and I think the producers should definitely consider him.

Cuaron chopped that movie up so much you barely know what was going on. The reason the movie was darker was because the book was darker. I don't care who does it, as long as they dont chop it to pieces and leave out key plot points.

Mryuck, I think you might be blaming Cuaron for things which were not his doing, though I'm not too sure. I thought his direction was excellent, although there was quite a bit left out as you stated. What I wonder is this: how much did Cuaron leave out, and how much was left out of the screenplay he was given to film? Does anyone know just how much control the directors actually have over what gets left out of these films?

all the books leave stuff out. the director doesn't have input in terms of leaving a whole section of the book out. the writer does that when he's adapting the book. each harry book got darker and darker but cuaron enhanced the tone and look for the film. he wanted to have a a cementary in the movie I believe but J.K. Rowling didn't give permission. he was able to convince her to allow the clock tower though i think.
