Though it's not strictly his fault for not being fully signed. He want's on board the Hobbit films but the contractual terms haven't been fully signed between both parties. Here's what he had to say to Empire Online.

"I wish it was definite, but it isn't," he said. "It's still in talks, there are still a lot of 'T's to cross and 'I's to dot. It's certainly not certain yet…But, as far as I'm concerned, [if it was definite] I would be packed in ten seconds."

He's also very interested in bringing back the stars of the original trilogy.

"Yeah, absolutely. I've been pretty much incredibly open about the things that I love and don't love in the past. I've turned down huge franchises in the past because there are parts of that world I don't gel with. The reason I took 'Blade II' is because I love the characters that Stephen Norrington created and the actors he used. That times ten is the reason why I'm interested in 'The Hobbit.'"

I do agree that DelToro would be a great choice because he can handle fantasy and action very well. Blade II is one of the best action movies ever made. The transition between CGI and real was flawless. If he doesn't get on board, I would maybe like to see a new face step-up. Imagine someone like Fincher, Chronenberg, Lynch, etc. doing this movie,,,,lol,,,,that would be cool.....but I would like to see somone good if not DelToro.

Most certainly agree Whiskey that Del Toro is a solid choice to handle The Hobbit while Peter Jackson handles the production end. Del Toro has a good vision and much like Jackson, earned respect after Pan's Labyrinth. But considering the latest ugly mess from New Line, this time for not allegedly paying the Tolkiens, and clearly its not the first time New Line has been in this situation, hopefully they don't take too long to get this picture made since it took years to get the rights for The Hobbit from MGM.

I thought the movie wasn't being made because of the family.

The LOTR trilogy is just not my deal. Couldn't get into the characters or settings. They were beautiful, yes. Gandolf was the only interesting character in my eyes. I don't really care if The Hobbit gets made or not. Del Toro is a great director though. I wish him the best in this endeavor.

Part of the problem Almost was that ever since 70's MGM has owned the rights to The Hobbit ala, the cartoon movie while WB had the rights to Lord of the Rings which led to that being made into a cartoon movie. MGM, known for acquiring movie rights and basically holding on to like a kung fu vice grip and not doing anything with them had The Hobbit held hostage for 30 years and after Rings rake in billions worldwide, MGM finally decided to TRY and get in on the cash cow, but couldn't because they had rid of a lot rights which bogged the studio down for years financially, especially now that Tom Cruise was brought in as a partner by a new regime and they done some housecleaning of some rights, The Hobbit being one of them. In the beginning the Tolkiens kinda felt doing The Hobbit would have been unnecessary, but then decided to go for it. Now that New Line has ONCE AGAIN FIND THEMSELVES IN ANOTHER ROUND OF NOT PAYING ROYALTIES especially that just went through this mess with Peter Jackson since Rings ended. Who the hell knows what's gonna come out of this. Don't be surprised if the Tolkiens take The Hobbit to another studio or just keep it in developmental hell.

Raithman...What are you talking about man? The Tolkiens have no say what so ever in where the Hobbit goes and stays because they don't own the rights, New Line optained temporary rights from Saul Zaentz, which is why they have been wanting to make this as soon as possible before they lose it and MGM has the distributing rights and both studios have been at odd as to Peter Jackson directing, New line against Peter directing MGM for him to direct...Where have you been man? It's all been reported right here and everywhere else... I don't believe there will be a problem as far as New Line now having to deal with the Tolkien estate, it will probably be dealt with quickly and if not quickly they might just start with production anyways and deal with it along the way...Theres big money to be made here and New Line does not want to lose that so I see them continuing this anyways or should I say Time Warner does not want to lose that cash cow... OK, so things have changed as far as rights are concerned and my assessment above is no longer valid, I guess this is what's going on... New Line and MGM, which holds the "Hobbit" feature rights, have pacted to co-finance and co-distribute the movies, with New Line handling North American and MGM international distribution.

Well MLA...the whole Hobbit rights have been held for years, long before Rings was ever made into a movie. MGM, had the rights for a long time. But obtaining rights is not free obviously. But it was one of many rights MGM had and basically let it collect dust since that time. The Hobbit animated film of the 70's was by MGM. And I know this stuff has been reported but here on this site. Now I didn't say they rid of the rights of the Hobbit freely, but the studio has been for years financially burden with rights they've obtained on other properties but never really put to film. SpiderMan was one of those rights MGM acquired after the success of Tim Burton's Batman, but like Hobbit, it sat on the shelf, never put it to film and Marvel spent 10 years fighting to get the rights back then put it in the hands of Sony. And yes both New Line and MGM clearly wants it to happen, but this snafu between New Line and the Tolkiens will put The Hobbit on hold for now. Why not...its been 30 years already.
