Director-producer Guillermo del Toro may be up to his ears in the post-production of Hellboy II:The Golden Army and can pen no screenplay while the WGA is under strike rules but that's not stopping him from eagerly preparing the next adaptation of Frankenstein. The director has told MTV that he's hard at work in pre-production, crafting drawings which he hopes to use as a basis for the world of the film.

“I started doing some notes before the strike,” he revealed. “[During the strike] I can only draw now.”

He has also indicated that he's more in favor of a 4 hour mini-series, which you watch in a video interview here.

“The only way to do the Shelley novel is to actually do a four-hour miniseries,” he said. “But I think there permutations in which you can tell the myth in a different way.”

Del Toro is probably one of the few directors that can tackle the world of Frankenstein and make a compelling film. Can't wait to hear more about this one.

Please, can we put a moratorium on remakes of Frankenstein, Dracula, and Scrooge? They've all been done to death. There is simply nothing new that can be done with these stories.

Now sequels/new adventures I have no problem with. (Frankenstein vs the _____, or Dracula meets the ______), but adaptations of the original stories?? Done way too many times already.

Nothing new to see here. Keep moving.....

I don't see anything wrong with del Toro doing Frankenstein or Dracula (I don't care about Scrooge). He's got such a unique vision that I'm sure he'd breathe fresh life into the subjects. If he does a two-part story I hopes it's for HBO or one of those pay channels...I hate all of the damned commercials on TV and would wait to see it on DVD.

Are you kidding narpin?
There's a lot to "see here", with the right director and cast these old favorites can be new classics. I mean, if you come to terms with the fact that hollywood is remaking EVERYTHING than why not these old classics. Yes, they've had their rehashes but I think the best one that they've done is 'Mary Reilly' with Julia Roberts. Showing the human side of Dr. Jekyll. Also I think it's one thing if a company that owns the rights to a classic film or franchise sells it off to a studio and PUSHES for a rehash than having a talented filmmaker, like Del Toro, show passion in it enought to do it right.
I say go for it.

I'm with the captain on this one.
I would like to see a four hour version of this.

Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is a favorite novel of mine. A better story about obsession and descent I cannot think of.

Del Toro doing it might be awesome, as long as he focuses more on the story and doesn't try to go all crazy with creatures. Otherwise I really like his style.

I'm always for another take on a classic.

Narpin--

Hollywood is out of ideas. Del Toro is a cinematic genius and one of the few people who has brought something fresh in recent years (Pan's Labyrinth and The Devil's Backbone). Let him have his Frankenstein reinvention.

Now, if you're chock full of ideas for new content, email me after the strike and I'll tell you where to go with your untapped genius.

Hollywood is NOT out of fresh ideas. It simply never had them. Even the first silent era films were takes on Vaudville, and Broadway shows. PROBABLY about 90% of all mvies out of Hollywood for it's entire existence have not been original, but instead rehashed takes on classic literature, and stage shows. Nothing is different now in Hollywood, than 50 years ago. get over it, and enjoy the goddamn movies already.
I think Del-Toro will make a fantastic Frankenstein movie. Frank is just below Zombies, and werewolves as my fav. Movie monsters.
A couple of my favorite Frankenstein takes are
Dean Koontz continuation of the Frankenstein legend in present day New Orleans (bad tv movie, but excellent books, if only part 3 would be released)AND ROBOCOP!

SONYMANswallows • Jan 03, 2008, 09:44am •
Dean Koontz's Frankenstein was pretty cool I wish they had gone with the series and ROBOCOP needs to return. I wish Frank Miller would do another storyline with Robert Rodriguez or just on his own.

Del Toro is talented butPan''s Labrynth used to much from Hellboy, I would like to see him tie the 2 together. What concerns me about HB2 is the drawing of the Golden Army caves looked too much like the ALIEN eggs from ALIEN. If there is a security mist above the Golden Army eggs I will cry foul and want blood. I could handle a new Frankenstein but the pace needs to be faster and unlike Deniro's version.

And why a mini series? Why not 2 theatrical releases.
