Del Toro Talks About Movies and The Net

By Rob M. Worley     March 19, 2002

Yesterday's HollywoodReporter featured a nice interviewwith Blade 2 director Guillermo del Toro. Surprisingly, thetopic of discussion was not the upcoming movie, but instead the Blade2.comwebsite.

Del Toro told TheReporter that he was as hands-on with the site as possible. "I wanted it very much to be a fan-oriented Website. In the same way that I did Blade 2 -- saying, 'What wouldI like to see in Blade 2 as a fan of the first one?' -- because I thinkthat's the important thing to do when you do something," Del Toro said.

For fans thathaven't visited the website, it has the feel of having the DVD with all theextras

"I went and said,'As a guy that likes to navigate Web sites, what would I love tohave?' And part of me wanted to have production design, which was verynice. And then we came up with the idea of having a voice-over," thedirector commented. "I wanted topublish the entire design of the movie, but I knew there were certain designissues with the creature in the movie that we wanted to keep secret. So wedecided that in spite of my best juvenile impulses, we should rein them in andnot reveal them until after the movie opens. But after the movie opens -... !Two days after, there's going to be a plethora of designs posted."

Del Toro alsoremarked that his web design philosophy differs from that of other officialmovie sites. "Ifind that the duty of an online official Web site is to become a link betweenthe filmmakers and the fans, and not to be a mouthpiece. It does take a lot ofwork, but the rewards are enormous just in terms of keeping it real."

The directorcommented that he appreciates movie news sites for the reality they infuse intothe Hollywood machine. "Living in a land of bullshit like Hollywood, orworking in it at least, you get to appreciate sincerity in whichever form youcan find it. The great thing about the talkback is it doesn't matter if you areSteven Spielberg or Guillermo del Toro or whoever -- you get lambasted orpraised with absolute sincerity."

And which movienews sites does the Guillermo del Toro enjoy? "I check Ain't It Cool, Icheck Chud, I check Coming Attractions, I check Dark Horizons, and I checkComics2Film. I check all those every day, and then I feel that I'm up to dateand I have the pulse of what the people that I really enjoy having as anaudience want."
