It seems that director Guillermo del Toro already has a plan for his upcoming adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde tale. The man who's currently traveling within middle earth recently spoke with MTV and revealed his game plan on how to adapt the 1886 classic tale to new audiences everywhere. Namely, a plan involving addiction between the two personalities.
“If you tell the story fully, you can not only see it as a story of repression, of the build-up of repression until it manifests itself like a monster,” Del Toro explained. “I think that Hyde — yes, he’s a creature of subterranean desire and all that — but it’s more than that. He’s an addiction.”
“In every story of addiction, people seem to [underestimate] what the addiction does to the person,” Del Toro continued. “And what does Hyde give Jekyll that is so powerful? That can be explored.”
Of course, when this film gets made is another story. Del Toro has numerous projects on his agenda, a modern take of Frankenstein being one, while also having to juggle a time consuming five year shoot for the upcoming Hobbit films.
