Dennis Quaid dons cowboy's boots

Actor to wear three hats on his new film

Dennis Quaid has plans to write, direct and star in a film based on the life of silver screen cowboy Spade Cooley. The movie, titled SHAME ON YOU after Cooley's most famous song, will chronicle the rise and fall of the 1940s western star. Katie Holmes (THE GIFT, BATMAN BEGINS) is in talks to play Cooley's wife.

Cooley starred in nearly three dozen western features between 1939 and 1950, becoming a Hollywood legend akin to Roy Rogers. Then in 1961 the actor got involved in a domestic dispute with his wife, with the final tragic result being Cooley murdering his wife right in front of their teenage daughter's eyes. He was sentenced to life in prison. In 1969 Cooley was let out on a temporary furlough to perform at a police benefit show. During the concert Hurley suffered a massive heart attack whiole backstage and passed away.

Quaid can next be seen in FLIGHT OF THE PHOENIX, out later this month in theaters.
