It was actor Dennis Quaid’s 16-year-old son Jack who encouraged him to play General Hawk, the G.I. Joe commanding officer in this year’s G.I.Joe: The Rise of Cobra.

“It was kind of a no-brainer. My son told me I had to do it,” said Quaid, who starred in last year’s Vantage Point and The Express. “It’s really gonna be fun – that’s all I can tell you right now. It’s gonna be a big summer-popcorn-tent-pole-blow-your-socks-off-action-film.”

Fans got to see the trailer for the live-action motion picture during the Super Bowl. Debuting Aug. 7, it’s based on the popular Hasbro toy line that spawned a cartoon series in the mid-1980s, as well as a comic book series initially published by Marvel Comics, then Devil’s Due Publishing, and currently IDW Publishing.

Created by Larry Hama, G.I.Joe is a team of highly-trained special missions operatives whose objective is “to defend human freedom against Cobra, a ruthless terrorist organization determined to rule the world.”

In addition to Quaid, the movie also stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt (10 Things I Hate About You) as Cobra Commander; Arnold Vosloo (The Mummy) as Zartan; Ray Park (Darth Maul from Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace) as Snake-Eyes, the mute, black-clad ninja/commando and one of the most popular characters, among others.

Hama, who consulted on the movie, likes the idea of Quaid playing Hawk.

“Mr. Quaid brings gravitas to the role and he takes the acting quite seriously. Yes, he can pull it off in spades. (I) have admired his work since 1980’s The Long Riders,” said Hama.

When asked if he could reveal any more of the plot, Quaid flashed his trademark grin and quoted the catchphrase spoken at the end of every G.I. Joe episode: “All I can tell you is ‘Knowing is half the battle.’”

God I hope this does not suck.

I hope it doesn't suck too but I think this is going to be Van Helsing...bad CGI (from the previews you can clearly see they suck) to stupid over the top story.  I rooting for something good but I have a bad feeling about this.

I remain opptimistic hopefully they pull it off like a stripper removes a boa.

I think it'll be cool. WHA!!!! Yeah it might not be great or a fantastic cinematic experience , but it'll be cool. Do any of you ever go to the movies just to see a fucking cool movie? Just askin.

The only thing that puzzles me is that Tommy Soloman (Joseph gordon levitt) is Cobra Commander, thats seems weird.

I'm not a big Joe fan, but I gotta tell you gauley, that one puzzled me too.  Dennis Quaid I can absolutely see as a military big wig. Ray Park as a silent masked ninja? No problem. JGL as the bad-ass mastermind of an evil organization? Not so much.

Hey Hobbs, I guess you don't know how these things work...Usualy they will hurry up and get a teaser or a trailer together even if the CGI is not top notch and still being worked on just  to get it out there for the audience too see and while the months leading up to the movie pass by, they are working on CGI fine tuning and what not and then WAMO! theres the CGI  looking good and fantabulous...They do this stuff all the time and if you plan on responding with a (Well the Van Halsing CGI looked bad) let me respond with a (Well not all CGI houses were created equaly) and though 95 people out of 395 were from ILM the other 300 people working on the CGI all came from 4 or 5 different CGI houses, based on this alone it's not hard to figure out why Van Helsing's cgi looked so muddled and not as crisp as you would think...

I've always thought Sommer's CGI has been crappy.  In all of his big action movies.  I've said it before & I'll say it again;  This movie has BIG FAT TURD written all over it.

Flint youre obviously too close to this film. I would have to surmise that you would hate 90% of any treatmnets of this property on film

gauleyboy420 2/25/2009 3:44:33 PM

Flint, that of course is meant as tounge in cheek.

Just busting your balls cause you're obviously a huge Joe fan, just judging by your avatar

I'm not expecting Gladiator, I'm expecting Transformers, so I think Joe will be awesome.  For Nostalga anyway.
