According to Mark Wahlberg in an interview with Empire Online, a script for a sequel to The Departed is currently being written and Robert De Niro is in talks to join the cast.

"They told me they wanted to try to do it and I said, 'Well, I enjoyed playing the character'." said Mark Wahlberg.

"They're talking about bringing in De Niro to play a senator or a congressman," added Wahlberg. "You know, the corruption obviously going deeper and higher up the ranks — reaching up the political chain. So it'll be fun. And if it's a success, they're gonna do a prequel and bring everyone back... make it a trilogy."

William Monahan is currently working on the script for the sequel.  Shooting is tentatively scheduled for the end of this year or the begging of next year.

KJ's Take:  I hated this idea when I first heard about it, but the more I think about it, the more it COULD be decent.  I'm just not sure about this quite yet, just not sure.

I don t understand the suspens here ! The original movie was a trylogie ! You can be sure it will foolow the same step, episode by episode, especially after the good result at the box office....

In comparing the Departed and Infernal Affairs, both films had similiar but different endings. I doubt the sequel would have any resemblance to the HK film since almost everybody got plastered in the Departed. However, a prequel can definitely happen.

A sequel, or a prequel, it really doesn't matter. They would be smart to leave this one alone. Or they could just think of the new film as something else. I really don't think even with DeNiro attached that the sequel will match the intensity of the Departed. Besides, unlike The Godfather this seems like a closed story without much maneuvering for any further films. Excellent film by the way. I know a few people that haven't seen it. I asked if they were on acid as they were telling me about the sheer awesome exuberance of Night at the Museum.

"KJ's Take: I'm just not sure about this quite yet, just not sure." What's not to be sure about? If the Source Material was a trilogy, then there is no reason that this shouldn't be, too.

Even though the source material was a trilogy, the conclusion of the film did not leave any reason to continue the story. Every loose end in the story was tied up... (I tried not to spoil it for those who did not see it). I would like to see how they can add onto this story without compromising the integrity of the first film and its strong cast.

A sequel wouldn`t really have much to do with the 2 main characters in the first one which leaves a very important part of why The Departed was so good out. In Infernal Affairs 2 they are still alive so it made sense for a sequel. I don`t know. I just don`t think it needs one.

They should make the prequel first.

If they make it like Godfather II, with returning actors, etc... then go for it, especially since it was based on a trilogy. If they can't get the actors back, then let it go and move on.

Look, if the cast, director, producers, and writer are all reunited...it's GOTTA be good. It's Scorcese. Name ONE bad Scorcese flick.

"The King of Comedy." Is Scorsese gonna direct the possible sequel? i haven't heard mention and kinda assumed (hoped maybe) he was gonna take a EP role and let someone else have the reins. He doesn't seem like the sequel type. and exfan for the love of God and your fellow man, get a spell checker if words like "suspense", "trilogy", and "follow" are too complicated for you to spell correctly.
