"The Departed" sequels?

According to AceShowBiz, Martin Scorsese's The Departed may be made into a trilogy.

"We may do another one, because it's based on a Hong Kong film ['Infernal Affairs'], and there is a trilogy," Mark Wahlberg said. "So we may do a sequel with a new cast, and a prequel and bring back the rest of the guys."

"They're talking to Robert De Niro and a couple of other people," Wahlberg continued. "Anybody who is anybody wants to work with Marty."

The site also mentions that rumors suggest Scorsese is seriously considering the possibility of a trilogy.

KJ's Take:  Um.  No.  This movie is a classic.  You don't do a sequel to Snatch, Se7en, Fight Club or various other movies, and you don't do a sequel to The Departed.  To do so would be to make a mockery of an amazing film.

Scorsese is not the type of directer to re-hash stories he has already done, and I hope he doesn't start now.

Snatch, se7en, fightclub, do you not do sequals to brad pitt movies or various other movies? Kj did you just buy the brad pitt box set? did you get rather intimate with that box set? come on dude. Anyway, the Departed was good but a classic i dont know, but id be down to see scorcese and his boys get together again. Not like that KJ! silly goose.

Haha! I didn't even realize those were all Brad Pitt movies until you just mentioned it.

I swear, I don't have a man crush on Pitt, heck I don't even consider him one of my favorite actors!

But regardless, those are three amazing movies.

While I agree that you don't /shouldn't do sequels to original movies like Snatch, Se7en, and Fight Club, does the same rule apply to adaptations/remakes? Especially when considering Infernal Affairs was part of a trilogy? Granted, Parts II and III were as much byproducts of the original's commercial success as they were extensions of the story. But if they work as a trilogy, and were marketed as a trilogy, where's the harm in adapting them for an American audience?

Also it's worth nothing that Brad Pitt and his Plan B Productions company produced The Departed. Kinda funny considering you didn't even realize those first three movies were all Pitt movies to begin with!

I think since the source material is a trilogy than it makes sense to do this. I trust the talent behind this to do a good job. Fight Club was adapted from a book, if that had a trilogy surrounding it then it would be okay to do a Fight Club trilogy. It would all depend on the source material. The other Pitt films mentioned (that was kind of strange) were original material and each film's story was complete so a sequel just wouldn't make sense.

I agree with most of the posters here, there's no reason that any Departed sequels would taint the original - especially if Scorsese is involved.

Let's look at another gangster movie classic, The Godfather. Within two years of its release, Coppola gave us The Godfather Part II. And in that case, there was no existing sequel story - Coppola and Mario Puzo hammered out the script and the novel simultaneously and it was released within two years of the original. Not to mention, like these proposed Departed projects, Godfather II was two movies in one - both a sequel and a prequel.

Granted, you can drag in Godfather Part III, but that was made nearly two decades after the original. I think a large part of the success of Part II was that Coppola "struck while the iron was hot." If Scorsese has a true passion to do these sequels like Copploa did with GF Part II, then I believe we'll be seeing a couple of movies that at best will be as good as The Departed, and at worst will be worthy extensions of the story and still better than 95% of the movies that make it to the big screen.

If he can assemble a cast anything like The Departed's for the sequels (one of them will have mostly the same cast it sounds like) then he can make whatever the hell he wants.

SPOILERS for the Original Films...

Unless I remember wrong the reason the original film could have a sequal was because the "Matt Damon" character LIVED at the end of the first film and he was the main character in the second movie.

That can't happen with the American version since they killed off Matt Damon's character. So if they do do a sequel it will not be based on the original HK film.

SPOILERS for Original Films.....

If I'm not mistaken I believe Infernal Affairs II is a prequel... It would allow all the original cast to come back.

Infernal Affairs III, however, faces the problem mallet described. Matt Damon's character not only lives in the original, but expresses remorse for the actions he'd taken. He turns himself in and visits the grave of DiCaprio's character, if I remember correctly.

I haven't seen all of Infernal Affairs II, however, so I'm not sure how much the sequel centers on/involves Damon's character. The degree of difficulty in adapting the sequel will obviously be tied to how involved Damon's character was.

I can see Mark Wahlberg's character getting more airtime in the sequel.
