DreamWorks Studios announced today that Johnny Depp has been set to star and Tim Burton to direct Sweeney Todd, the award-winning Stephen Sondheim musical thriller.

The co-production with Warner Bros. will star Johnny Depp as the titular Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Depp is currently starring in the record-breaking blockbuster, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.

Sweeney Todd marks the 6th collaboration between the actor and director. The previous Burton-Depp films have been Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Tim Burton's Corpse Bride, Ed Wood, Edward Scissorhands and Sleepy Hollow.

Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald will partner with Richard Zanuck and John Logan to produce the screenplay adaptation which was written by Logan. Production is planned to begin early next year for a late 2007 release. Paramount will distribute for DreamWorks domestically and Warner Bros. internationally.

The story of Sweeney Todd is of a wrongfully imprisoned barber in Victorian England who sets out to seek revenge on the judge who imprisoned him.

Producer/Writer John Logan's most recent screenplays were The Aviator and The Last Samurai, and he was nominated for an Oscar for his work on DreamWorks' Gladiator.

Cor blimey, guvna! Depp likes to trot out his English accent, don't he? Seriously, this seems a bit too close to Scissorhands and From Hell, but Depp is usually watchable.

ponyboy, I have to disagree. The synopsis is correct; the barber is so obsessed with gathering revenge against a judge who wrongfully imprisioned him just to get to Sweeney's wife. He escapes from prison, meets the piemaker, fall in twisted love, and practices his killing while the piemaker makes pies out of the tasties. He loses his fricking mind basically, I mean cmon, who wouldn't after all the damned meat pies. ECCCCH!!! I can't look at Jamaican meat patties the same anymore. But either way, Depp will knock the stuffing out of this one. Oscar? Probably not, but who cares? Depp doesn't need an Oscar to validate how talented he is.

The more PC version?!?! There isn't a PC version of Sweeney Todd!!! He slit their throats and they got made into pies. What part is PC?! Sorry but doing it out of revenge really isn't any better than just being insane. I mean...human meat pies...wrong on SO many levels. And thats why I'll see it.

Hey ponyboy76 they are basing the movie on the musical. And in the musical he was wrongfuly imprisoned. I wonder if Burton is going to do this as a musical?

ponyboy, you are absolutely correct. I digress. ;-)

The man slit people's throats and gave them over to be made into meat pies!!! I don't care if someone screwed him over in the beginning! I can't (and no one really should) empathize with a guy that ends up slitting throats of victims that in turn become lunch....NO!...eww..wrong... You can empathize with the guy for being wrongly imprisoned but the fact that he becomes a murderer takes away the former emapthy. We can agree to disagree. Alas, Depp and Burton will do an excellent job. Can't wait.

Depp is yet to hold a film on his own that has had big box office. Even with Burton he has only had big numbers when Depp has a big named supporting cast.
