One of the most recognizable actors on the planet is going to play the most recognizable magician of all time. Or at least he hopes so. Johnny Depp is currently in negotiations to play Harry Houdini in The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America's First Superhero. The project will be released through Lionsgate Summit Label.

The Hollywood Reporter had this for a synopsis of the film: “The story, which is said to be in the vein of Indiana Jones, recasts Houdini as not just a master escape artist but an investigator of the world of the occult. Noah Oppenheim wrote the screenplay, which is based on William Kalush and Larry Sloman's book of the same name”.

Depp is always entertaining to watch, however his last two film, Transcendence and The Lone Ranger will less than memorable. There was the rumor that Disney and Marvel wanted to Depp for Doctor Strange in Marvel’s next Phase of films. Will this take him out of the running?

Unless there's a twist at the end where they reveal he's actually in fact Dr. Strange, and Houdini is just another alias for him,  then I don't really care about this film. #redbox

I would be more interested in a historical movie of Houdini, than a reimagining of the man as an occult superhero.

I'm wondering if this movie is more a grounded drama based on Houdini's actual work debunking mediums or if it's some fantastical thing where he's fighting actual supernatural forces.

First thing's first, ditch that long ass title and just call it Houdini!

From what I've heard the book isn't an occult/supernatural story but is more based on evidence that he used his skills for spying for the US government as well as debunking mediums. Hopefully, the movie will stick with that rather than add the supernatural.

It kind of sounds like it will be similar to a silent movie Houdini made called Haldane of the Secret Service where he plays kind of a superspy like James Bond. You can find it easily on Youtube.

I hope that it does take Depp off the table for Dr. Strange.  We don't need Depp making some quirky Dr. Strange.  He's an overated actor, who plays the same quirky character in every movie.

isn't there a mini-series or made for TV movie about Houdini with Adrien Brody coming out this fall?

BunyonSnipe 5/28/2014 5:33:31 PM

He is getting on a bit, a role like this will require a huge amount of training...

And didn't Guy Pearce do this already?

aegrant...Good catch.  Houdini 4-hour mini series starring Adrien Brody is scheduled for A&E in the fall.  Strange thing is that Lionsgate is also involved in that venture ?

Eldogg42...trying to imagine Jack Sparrow in Chocolat, Edward Scissorhands in Donnie Brasco, Ed Wood in Public Enemies...if they're all the same character it should work...right??

You guys should know by now that Marvel would never let Depp or anyone play a quirky Dr Strange. They would make a proper character.
